Bad Luck Brian, or Poor Brian is the name used to describe an internet image macro series featuring a picture of a blonde boy named "Brian" accompanied by descriptions of hilariously tragic or embarrassing situations. These images are often seen on internet meme websites such as Reddit or 9gag.

The first Bad Luck Brian image was submitted on Quickmeme on January 26th, 2012. The original post, featuring the captions "takes driving test / gets first DUI" did not gain much popularity on the internet.^[1] Despite its lack of popularity, the original post would later spawn many very successful variations.

The first Bad Luck Brian post to really achieve major success was submitted to Reddit less than a day after the original post. It had the captions "Tries to fart stealthily in class / shits", and gained high popularity on Reddit. It spawned a number of variations and got up to 3,300 votes in 2 months. After another resurgence led by the post "Falls asleep in class / wet dream", the series spread to a number of other websites and quickly became one of the most popular memes in the advice animal category.

The first two Bad Luck Brian posts appeared on January 29th, 2012, which marks the start of the meme's growing popularity. The major breakthrough was on March 19th when the series was introduced on other internet image sharing sites like 9gag and Pinterest.^[2] The popularity of the meme was been rising ever since.

There are many discussions on the internet on the true identity of "Brian". A post appeared in April of 2012 that claimed "Bad Luck Brian's" true name is Jason Bercovici and is now grown up and working as a computer programmer in Europe.^[3] This information has yet to be proven to be true, and there has also been a lot of people on the internet who claim the post to be false. The true identity of "Brian" is currently unknown.
