Terri Schiavo

[edit]

Q: While undoubtably notable in the realm of politics, was the Terri Schiavo case really notable in the realm of medical ethics? Were not the medical ethics involved already long established? 204.128.230.1 (talk) 23:37, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Right now the list of cases in the box are uncategorized. Perhaps eventually the cases should be categorized for geographical location, medical issue, and for things like whether it was a medical debate versus a political debate. The Schiavo case is not the only political case in the box right now, but without setting more precise inclusion criteria, I think it is close enough to being a good fit for now. May I suggest that Gillick competence be added to this list? Colds7ream (talk) 14:59, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I added it. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:45, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This case is wrongly placed at present: it is more correctly a case of children's ability to consent to medical treatment (against the wishes of parents).Trankuility (talk) 03:58, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Box header

[edit]

Should the header be "Legal cases in medical ethics"? Although many have, not every case (to my knowledge) has been in the courts. I'm not sure that Rom Houben would qualify under that header. That is a case where legal proceedings had little, if any, impact on the ethical issues. How would Timothy Quill (a notable case not on Wikipedia) fall in since he was investigated but never charged? At the moment, I think it would be best to just call it "Cases in medical ethics". At some point, the list might be divided into "Doctors", "Patients" and "Case law", but I think that is premature given the current list length.Novangelis (talk) 21:09, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Fortunately the title of the template was already "Medical ethics cases", so I only had to change the displayed name to "Medical ethics cases" rather move the template or anything else. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:50, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sun Hudson

[edit]

Sun Hudson's case wasn't an assisted suicide, since Hudson himself expressed nothing regarding his own wishes. Can this entry be moved to a more appropriate category? 71.62.157.188 (talk) 09:26, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Christiane Völling case considered issues of valid consent and disclosure in a case of an intersex woman subject to involuntary sex reassignment.[1] It raises bioethical issues, but does not fit into existing categories. Can it be added in a new section? Thanks. Trankuility (talk) 03:28, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Both this case and Gillick would better be placed in a new section on consent to medical treatment. Trankuility (talk) 03:59, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've made this change, per WP:BOLD. "Informed consent to treatment" is generic. A category around "Sexual health and sterilisation" might work also, but not for all cases in the section as at present. Trankuility (talk) 04:16, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

David Reimer

[edit]

I feel the David Reimer case deserves to be added here. It's a notable case and fairly relevant to current issues. > RUL3R>trolling>vandalism 21:06, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
