Rename to "Conservatism in the United Kingdom"

[edit]

For the sake of consistency, I believe that the template should be renamed as the following in the title of this topic, as other ideologies in other other countries have a similar name. ValenciaThunderbolt (talk) 12:41, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas Carlyle a "conservative"

[edit]

He is very little common with Oakeshott, Ferguson, or Hitchens (yes, I know it is Peter and not Christopher"), regardless for all his hate of the French Revolution, he does not strike me as someone, who necessarily wanted to protect any of the established institutions in a fundamental way. StrongALPHA (talk) 10:03, 29 May 2023 (UTC) At least not in some sentimental way that other conservatives would, he is more of a proto-"conservative revolutionary" like those in the Weimar Republic. StrongALPHA (talk) 10:07, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Authoritative sources identify Carlyle as a prominent British conservative.
For example, Herbert Tingsten in his influential work on conservative thought dedicates an entire chapter to the study of Carlyle.
A reactionary romantic and arch-conservative, Carlyle believed in God, religion, aristocracy, heroism, monarchy. Trakking (talk) 10:51, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Waugh

[edit]

Why is Waugh on this template? He was not a member of the Conservative party and never voted for it. His views were blimpish and reactionary but he was in no sense a capital C Consdervative. Tim riley talk 08:09, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Waugh was an ultraconservative reactionary; he did not support the Conservative Party for the simple reason that he believed that it was not conservative enough. And by the way, small-c conservatives are still conservatives. Trakking (talk) 08:37, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete commentators section

[edit]

A few contemporary conservative journalists as a section is quite reductionist. Harry Cole... what about the 100s of other conservative-leaning journalists? Andrew Sullivan... has been in the US for 40 years commentating on US politics. Verity... lacks any real notoriety. This section either needs to be huge or removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.242.166.128 (talk) 13:28, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
