[edit]

I am creating a display for a small dinosaur museum. I was going to credit him as the first paleontologist. Would this be a path to take on my exhibit?

OH Yes. William Buckland (and many before) had picked up collections of gigantic bones, but Gideon was the first to understand and name the 'age of reptiles' (1820's). He was also the first to find the first herbivorous dinosaur (Buckland found the first carnivorous dinosaur although he had no idea what is was at the time).

Mantell is one of those incredible unsung heroes of the Victorian age. It was only the intervention of such eminaries as Sir Charles Lyell that helped Gideon gain a little of the respect that he should have had for his incredible insight and investigation into the animal kingdom.

If you fancy investigating a great story, look into the fight between Mantell and Sir Richard Owen. There is a lot of literature available. Dennis Dean's book on Mantell is the best. Austin Graham Bagnall of National Library Centre, Wellington, New Zealand is a good contact on Walter Mantell, Gideon's son (New Zealand is also where Gideon's original diaries currently reside, although they were published by the Curwen Press in the 1940's).

Mantell and Owen

[edit]

I'm afraid the article at present does not give an adequate account of Richard Owen's evildoing against Mantell, important because of Owen's position in the evolution debate, and Mantell's position in palaeontology. If no-one else takes it up, I will in due course. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:18, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know Mantell was really punished by Owen and there should be more about what Owen did.Quantum squid88 (talk) 18:56, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

First Fossil Tooth

[edit]

Maybe this is not trivial. The first tooth that his wife found is kept in Wellington, New Zealand. It is said by someone who should know -- in a very interesting science-talk (Gideon is mentioned). [1] 203.100.214.164 (talk) 10:54, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The portrait shown doesn't look anywhere near the ones of Mantell that I know, but like one of this guy (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Rudolph_Thorbecke). Look at this portrait from the Dutch Wikipedia for comparison (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand:Gideon_Mantell.jpg) --Ilja.nieuwland (talk) 07:19, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
