Vanakkam (Tamil:வணக்கம்) ( ) is a tradition in Tamil culture. It is found with many meanings such as worshiping, praying, worshiping, praising, congratulating, thanking.[1]

It varies from place to place, depending on the person receiving the Vanakkam. Irai Vaṇakkam means worship of God or worship of God.[2]

A Vanakkam mentioned in Thirukkural:

கோளில் பொறியின் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான் தாளை வணங்காத் தலை. (Thirukkural 9)

Etymology[edit]

From வணங்கு to bend, to bow, to worship, to adore, cognate with വണക്കം (vaṇakkaṁ), వంగు (vaṅgu) and ಬಗ್ಗು(baggu).
