Last minute Olympic DYK hook for 2 August?

edit

I've expanded an article about mixed relays in athletics and nominated a DYK hook about the Olympic qualification. The Olympic mixed relays are scheduled for 2 and 3 August 2024 [1], so I was hoping this could still be in time, but I'm not sure how I should go about this, so I wanted to bring the nomination to your attention. – Editør (talk) 11:36, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

It’s a tad late in the process with the prep sets for those days full already. But you could post at Wikipedia talk:Did you know and hope that someone expedites it review. Good luck, Editør. Schwede66 14:38, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you're right it's late. Thank you for your suggestion. – Editør (talk) 16:03, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see you posted that request on the Olympics WP group. It needs to go to Wikipedia talk:Did you know, Editør. Schwede66 00:54, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've posted messages on three WikiProject talk pages and also added the article to Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Olympic hooks table, I was afraid that posting another message on that talk page would be too much. – Editør (talk) 02:12, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see. Yes, adding it to the table is good. I just fear that because the table gets edited so much, most editors frequenting that page will skip table edits. Schwede66 03:31, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I decided to ask an editor who still needed a QPQ for an open DYKN to consider reviewing it and the editor did, so it worked out in the end. – Editør (talk) 07:12, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Nice one! Schwede66 10:10, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Gerda. It’s been quite an exercise! Schwede66 10:55, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
It looked like heavy lifting even from a distance. My exercise are rather the recent deaths articles, and three women at the same time yesterday was a sad record. One of them is the topic of my story today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:13, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Main Page history/2024 July 30b had a baritone, a violinist, a composer and a Bach cantata, - almost too much, and the composer's article, Wolfgang Rihm, improved much over the last days, could still grow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:42, 31 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

If you like it. I don't need any credit for it - that should I expect go to the editor who wrote most of it (if he does not write one first - time as usual is tight on this one).

... that the parents of American Olympian Minna Stess built a concrete skatepark in their backyard for their children?

Source: "So their parents ... decided to concrete the yard, turning it into a place for skating.... and now the backyard skatepark is the only place 14-year-old Minna can train for the Tokyo Games" 2603:7000:2101:AA00:34AF:AC34:37AD:2505 (talk) 06:32, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sure. I'll get onto it shortly.
Have you seen the note about Sarah Levy above? Schwede66 07:47, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I had not. Thanks. I'll seek to address. The overall detector indicates copyvio "Violation Unlikely; 11.5% similarity", and much of the overlap is words that are not copyvio (names, places, the like), but I will see what I can do. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:34AF:AC34:37AD:2505 (talk) 09:04, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Update. Frustratingly, after my initial effort, the detector - still indicating Violation Unlikely - upped similarity to the 13% range. Checking the top matching source, the vast majority of indicated "matches" are with names, places, and the like .. but I will give this a shot tomorrow again when my head has cleared. Thanks. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:34AF:AC34:37AD:2505 (talk) 09:28, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't pay any attention to the percentage and the "unlikely" statement. It always pays to look at the passages that the tool highlights. Schwede66 09:32, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that head's up. I've addressed it that way as well now, though there was little to do. As before, but even moreso, the vast majority of what appears in highlights consists of names. Which are not the sort of thing that rises to the level of copyvio. (As reflected here: "Copyright law does not protect names, titles, or short phrases or expressions...To be protected by copyright, a work must contain a certain minimum amount of authorship ... Names, titles, and other short phrases do not meet these requirements.") --2603:7000:2101:AA00:34AF:AC34:37AD:2505 (talk) 20:25, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
DetroitFan7, it's been suggested that I nominate your Minna Stess article at DYK and set up the nomination so that you get a credit. Is that ok by you? Before I go ahead, though, there is one sentence part from one of the sources that has found its way into the article (your original version of it) that would have to be rewritten to be clear of close paraphrasing: Stess attends Petaluma’s Valley Oaks Independent Studies High School, which allows her to study virtually while traveling. Let me know. Schwede66 08:14, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Schwede66:, that's OK by me. DetroitFan7 (talk) 09:10, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Possibly worth pooling the remaining Olympic hooks to run during the Paralympics?--Launchballer 11:17, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Doesn't make sense to me. Closest in time seems most sensible for hooks where the subject attracts the most public interest on a date certain. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:5598:8E79:93B0:13BC (talk) 21:05, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Launchballer, maybe. But I won't be running the show. There have been way too many DYK regulars moaning at me about the Olympics. I have a high resilience level but it's got to be fun, and that's been taken away. Schwede66 22:12, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Signatures

edit

Hi. Regarding Special:Diff/1238859794 and Special:Diff/1238859401, I haven't followed the full history here, but I'm not overjoyed with having you sign things on my behalf. @Theleekycauldron RoySmith (talk) 12:36, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

My apologies, @RoySmith. I didn't know that you don't necessarily follow discussions where you get pinged (and I had wondered why you did not respond, even though I had asked for a response). I shall revert. Schwede66 22:08, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, I'm not sure which discussion you're referring to. RoySmith (talk) 22:20, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, the other week, you put your foot down stating that you do not want hooks being signed by you when you didn't check them, @RoySmith. So when there was a need the other day to do a major hook reshuffle, with your hooks going into Leeky's set and Leeky's hooks going into yours, I documented in detail what I had done, and how to ensure that Leeky's hooks don't show in your queue with her signature (which will happen in 40 minutes' time). But it seems I just cannot please you, hence I shall give up trying to do so. Schwede66 23:21, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK, now I remember that discussion. There's been so many, it's hard to keep track, and it's not obvious to me that you were saying, "I'm going to put your signature on somebody's talk page". I don't think it's fair to interpret my not following every thing that's been mentioned in every discussion and then being surprised to find my signature on something I didn't expect as being impossible to please.
Taking a step back, I'm all for running a bunch of olympic-related material, but it seems to have taken over and pushed our normal processes to the breaking point. You mentioned in that thread that "However, RoySmith had in the meantime promoted Prep2 to Q2". Yes, I did, because I was told it was ready to go. Except it turned out you felt it needed a major reshuffle after fact. If we're doing major reshuffles after things hit the queue, something's gone off the rails. DYK for Sarah Levy (rugby union)

edit

On 8 August 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sarah Levy (rugby union), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that American Olympic rugby player Sarah Levy is the great-granddaughter of a Springbok? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Sarah Levy (rugby union). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Sarah Levy (rugby union)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Done. I have done a bit of page moving and this athlete is now at Josh Katz; you might want to fix incoming links (not essential, though). What is essential is to provide a reference for his date of birth. Nomination form is at Template:Did you know nominations/Josh Katz. When you provide the QPQ, it's best to also leave a comment so that the reviewer doesn't just look at my comment (as happened the other day). Schwede66 00:37, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
