Dr. Deden Bonni Koswara, the hospital's director, confirmed on Monday that the birth of the quintuplets was the first on record in the district.
Quintuplet birth is extremely rare, and the odds of conceiving quintuplets are 1 in 55 million births.
Dr. Koswara said that during the woman's past pregnancy check-ups, doctors only detected three babies. However, at a later check-up in the 28th week of pregnancy, another baby was detected.
"Even close to the birth date, we detected only four fetuses," he said. "The other one was not detected during the USG test due to their position."
The 32-year-old woman, identified as Nuraeni, was referred to the Indramayu Regional Hospital by her local health center for delivery.
The quintuplets—four girls and one boy—were safely delivered through cesarean birth on Sunday. They have been placed in intensive care due to their below-average weight at birth.
"The five babies were born healthy. At present, the mother and her babies are recovering in separate wards," Dr. Koswara said.
He also assured that the treatment costs for Nuraeni and her newborns will be covered by BPJS Kesehatan, the state health insurer.
