We analyse the potential benefits and risks of the carbon removal projects and technologies to future-proof your investments. These include the project’s capacity and maturity, risks and mitigation of those risks, as well as overall governance. Before purchasing carbon removals, it's crucial to consider the risk of reversal alongside permanence. In carbon removal, reversal means the sequestered carbon is released back into the atmosphere. Some nature-based carbon removal methods can be particularly susceptible to this risk. For example: ▶ Soils could quickly release stored carbon if regenerative agricultural practices are halted. ▶ Trees can burn in wildfires, break during storms, or be washed away in floods. However, practices lower this risk, such as using native species and increasing biodiversity rather than planting monocultures. And, additional ecosystem resilience only increases the benefit to environment and local communities. Taking a comprehensive, science-led approach to your climate strategy includes addressing these potential risks. While carbon removal suppliers often set aside buffers (e.g., leaving 10% of forest cover uncredited) to mitigate possible reversal, ensuring mitigation of this and related risks should always be taken into account. As companies aim for net-zero emissions, monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial. But where do you start? The journey begins with GHG accounting, a process of measuring and monitoring emissions to identify reduction opportunities. A big part of this is carbon accounting (or carbon footprint analysis), which is the first step towards implementing emission reductions in a company’s value chain. Our clients Stink Studios have released their 2024 Impact Report, which outlines their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. It’s great to see a breakdown of their carbon management strategy, which includes a pledge to removing 100% of their unavoidable emissions. To do so, they’ve invested in a range of medium to highly permanent carbon removal methods, balancing social and environmental co-benefits with climate impact. Today we are glad to announce that Hotelplan Group has invested in a portfolio of carbon removal projects with Klimate. Hotelplan Group is working to promote more sustainable tourism, and is therefore pursuing a sustainability strategy that encompasses carbon removals among many other elements. Their portfolio includes important solutions such as direct air capture, biochar bio-oil, and enhanced weathering that remove and store carbon from the atmosphere. By entering a three-year partnership with Klimate, Hotelplan Group aims to promote development of important nascent technologies, but also take responsibility for the emissions they have not yet reduced or avoided. In this edition of our meet the methods videos, we’d like to introduce forestry 🌱 Forestry might be the most visible method of carbon removal as trees are well-known for storing carbon. One element that makes forestry so interesting is the impacts a forestry project can have. There can be benefits to biodiversity, environment, and local communities giving this solution important synergies with other climate-related crises. While trees are scalable and available to deploy as a carbon removal solution, we don’t have enough land to just plant our way out of this crisis.
