Automated and decentralized ATMP production technologies

Info

The development of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) is progressing rapidly. ATMPs are tissue engineered products as well as cell- and genetherapies. First products are already commercially available and new therapies are constantly approved. ATMP production is either patient specific or produced in only small batches, this leads to complex manual processes and consequently, high production costs. Therefore, the full clinical potential cannot be harnessed without developing next-generation manufacturing technologies. In order to increase ATMP availability for patients and to reduce costs, new concepts are required along the entire value chain. This could be achieved by a more automated and digitalized production of cell and gene therapies. The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) based in Stuttgart, Germany is an research facility of excellence recognized internationally for their innovative work in the field of production technology. With 25 years of experience and expertise in laboratory automation and production processes, the IPA has the know-how to implement the vision of personalized production. This provides a strong basis for researching into the automation of cell and gene therapies which are both unique and highly personalized fields in science. Overall, the institute is well-positioned to explore this new field while striving towards improving industry standards on mass personalization and sustainability. In cooperation with other research institutes, universities and industry, Fraunhofer IPA has been researching and developing on the topic in various publicly funded projects for years. In this channel, we want to give an overview of the activities.
