EU launches trade war with China In a bold move that has sent ripples through global markets, the European Union has effectively launched a trade war against China. This decision, announced just three days after the European Parliament elections, raises significant questions about the influence and timing of the EU’s legislative body. The Announcement On Monday, the European Commission revealed a comprehensive set of tariffs and trade restrictions aimed at curbing what it described as "unfair trade practices" by China. The measures target key Chinese industries, including technology and steel, and represent one of the most aggressive trade policies adopted by the EU in recent history. A Strategic Timing? The timing of this announcement is particularly noteworthy. Coming on the heels of the European Parliament elections, it suggests a strategic maneuver by the European Commission to assert its authority independently of the newly elected MEPs. Analysts argue that this rapid move underscores the limited sway the European Parliament holds over immediate and critical economic decisions. China's Response China has predictably responded with strong objections, accusing the EU of protectionism and threatening reciprocal measures. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued a statement warning that "such unilateral actions will only harm global trade stability and economic cooperation." Market Reactions Markets reacted swiftly to the news, with European stocks experiencing volatility and Chinese markets facing downward pressure. Economists predict that this trade conflict could escalate, potentially affecting global supply chains and economic growth. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) observes two major trends: 1.a. Weak trade and weak investment - meaning for the the LDCs weak growth! - in the estimates of all IOs. 1.b. FDI was found weak for the 2nd straight year 2.a The funds directed towards the SDGs and the related sectors to the SDGs fell by 10% in 2023 - worrying trend 3. Since 2019 the geographical distribution of manufacturing projects mainly shifted closer to OECD markets - with new strategic locations for the TNCs. 3.b. Decentralization ito investment esp wrt manufacturing - towards Central America, Mexico, West Asia and North Africa - are the beneficiary region 4. Total Investment landscape - wrt Decline of FDI - decreased 2% in 2023! Stabilized around 1.3 Trillion USD - nothing major is happening - going down but not dramatically but remains stable... Developing nations saw a decline of 7% of FDI - meaning - which is more damaging than the 10% average decline. Decline in investment related to the SDGs sectors #UNCTAD thinks that there will be a most growth in 2024 - change of tendency - more optimistic - extra effort to ease the financial conditions and investment facilitation - this could support this optimism wrt 2024 The decrease in M&A for EU (14%) & North America (5%) The most vulnerable countries - The LDCs and LLDCs and SIDS saw a slight increase in FDIs When it comes to #SustainableFinance which is part of the worrying trends A marginal growth in sustainable bonds but inflows into sustainable investment flow dropped by 60% - not yielding the expected result - not as stable as it was thought to be See discussion about Green-Washing - because more and more investors are demanding more impact and better credible reporting This means that the investor is becoming more demanding and looking more credible on everything called sustainable/ESG investing. External auditing and 3rd parting rating will be important to maintain the entusiasm towards sustainable finance. Negative spill-overs on the SMEs due to the Sustainability Standards with the SMEs shouldn't be overburdened by many standards (spaghettibowl of standards) - need a system that is credible and that allow SMEs to participate in GVC - but need a more straightward and less complex system!s Investor registration expanded to 124 in 2023/24 - acc. ito investment facilitation - to support the weakest countries with the weakest institutions. Digital government for investment facilitation - benefiting all businesses (domestic/foreign) is an important tool that could strengthen - to counteract wrt weak FDI towards DCs and SDGs investment. The resistance level in the chart at USD 70,000 seems insurmountable. However, investors are firmly expecting prices to rise in the medium term. Falling crypto prices do not seem to be dissuading investors from their medium-term fundamental conviction. The strategic bias for Bitcoin has risen to +46 percentage points, its highest level since 16 October 2020! This means nothing other than that investors are showing a latent willingness to buy and want to take advantage of the more favourable prices to enter or increase their positions. This suggests that the consolidation that has been ongoing since March 2024 will be resolved up- wards in the coming weeks, although the 70,000 mark is a very strong technical resistance level. The time differential index (not shown, see chart generator on www.sentix.co.uk) deserves special attention in the sentix data, which also provides an anti-cyclical buy signal this week with a value of -45 percentage points. When undertaking a macro-analysis of crypto fund flows, a nuanced, multi-dimensional picture starts to emerge. Jonathan Reiter at ChainArgos presents in this short presentation how, when 'zoomed out', different communities of criminals and terrorists are seen to be using common intermediaries (and exchanges known for their weak controls) to assist in laundering activities. An observation: single-use address provisioning and limitations of clustering heuristics may hamper investigations, and will make source of funds less interrogable. While wallets might be assigned to individuals, omnibus wallets and separate wallets for deposits and withdrawals will complicate lineage. To these points, Jonathan acknowledges that tracing 'through' a service provider is difficult; exchanges in uncooperative jurisdictions will make discovery particularly difficult. Finally, VASPnet shows that many of the exchanges presented on Jonathans slides are poorly regulated; many have a 'negative' regulatory footprint (ie. more warnings than licenses or registrations held). Key takeaway: #CounterpartyVASPDueDiligence can help to stem transfers to or from higher risk #VASPs. What was interesting is that Jonathan refers to brand name; what should come to light is - what legal entity is the address holders' relationship with?
