📣 Intensive Debate Marks Final Spurt in German-Speaking Community's Election Campaign - Viewers decide on the topics 📣 In the critical phase of the election campaign for the Parliament of the German-speaking Community in Belgium, leading candidates engaged in an intense debate, featuring active viewer participation. The program began with viewers voting on the most pressing issues, prioritizing the shortage of skilled labor, followed by education and finance. Throughout the program, individual polls on these topics were conducted. By the debate's end, viewers had the chance to vote on the most impressive candidate. Notably, participants provided extensive reasoning for their choices, which were summarized using #AI and incorporated into the debate. Olivier Krickel, Head of Program at BRF, commented, "With #Megaphone, we engaged our audience quickly and effectively during our live event, providing a highly efficient feedback channel for audience reactions." Never before has the market share for an ESC broadcast been as high as it was this year. Among the younger TV audience (15-59 years), the market share was even at 59.0%. #publicmedia

ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE published its final figures for Q1 2024 today. With a Group revenue increase of 6% to EUR 867m (organic +7%) and an adjusted EBITDA increase of 35% to EUR 72m, the preliminary results we published on 14 May were confirmed. The Entertainment business and non-core activities each contributed about half to Group revenue growth while strong growth of Commerce & Ventures (especially Verivox GmbH and flaconi) more than offset a softer performance of Dating & Video. As the following chart shows, the recovery of the advertising business continued in the first quarter, achieving clearly positive growth for the first time in eight quarters. We therefore remain optimistic that we will also be able to achieve growth in DACH advertising revenues for the year as a whole. As a result, we have also confirmed our full-year outlook (revenues of EUR 3.95bn (+/-EUR 150m), adjusted EBITDA of EUR 575m (+/-EUR 50m). #financialresults #Q12024 #P7S1 #PSM #PSM777

✨ I'm thrilled to announce that I've joined Media Lab Bayern's MEDIA TECH Lab's Batch 5 🤩 I’m developing a browser extension tailored for editors and professionals involved in text-related research, writing, and editorial reviewing. This MIT licensed open-source "AI toolbox" enables direct interaction with any website's content for tasks such as extraction (and Markdown conversion), audio transcription, translation, summarization, re-phrasing and more. It supports all major open-source and commercial AI models (OpenAI, Anthropics, Google, Cohere, Meta, etc. pp.), whether cloud-based, deployed on-premise, or locally. A pivotal goal is to foster a community that collaboratively creates and refines the open-sourced, high-quality dynamic prompts that drive the AI models within a professional, journalistic context. One technical challenge I'm tackling here is to minimize costs and enhance privacy by ensuring that AI tasks are processed locally whenever possible. This includes demonstrating how to implement vector embedding, indexing, and search in-browser using HNSW and cosine similarity algorithms, accelerated by WebAssembly and WebGPU. 🚀 This journey began last week at Media Lab Bayern with an exceptional group of fellows including Dr. Mirza Klimenta, Tobias Sterbak, and Sabine Wieluch, who also secured funding for their impressive projects 🙌 — definitely worth checking out! 😶 Breaking news: huge European film merger! European powerhouse Mediawan has acquired Munich based Leonine, a leading production and distribution group active in German-speaking markets. With the acquisition of Leonine, Mediawan will boast a portfolio of 85 labels, a catalogue spanning 30,000 hours of premium content and revenues exceeding €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion). Mediawan‘s worth is now believed to be in the $2-billion range. The deal is an all-stock transaction; both companies have the same shareholder, the U.S. private equity fund KKR. Mediawan now has a significant footprint in all major European markets, including German-speaking territories which represent the continent’s second largest TV market. The pact positions Mediawan as one of the world’s biggest super indies with a large proportion of scripted business across prestige series and movies. Mediawan now spans 13 countries including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Benelux and the U.K. in Europe, alongside operations in Africa, Asia and the U.S.

Never thought that i would be described as "schmallippig", but interesting times require interesting adjustments, Alexander Krei 😅 But thanks to Medienmagazin DWDL.de for summarizing the Streaming Summit at ANGA COM with Joyn GmbH (Katharina Frömsdorf); Sky Deutschland GmbH (Elke Walthelm); Deutsche Telekom (Arnim Butzen) & RTL Deutschland (Henning Nieslony). https://lnkd.in/d8icxauV My key message: To build a sustainable streaming business you should be reasonable but ambitious with the pricing - to consumers AND to advertisers. Streaming platforms offer premium content on scale AND a very attractive audience which is (other than linear TV) predominantly in the target group 14-49y. Our OMR masterclass with all eyes on screens and Vodafone is a proof point how many people you can reach only via Steaming and not on Linear TV at all (>70% on DAZN were incremental!). Security in Change – that’s the guiding theme of this year's Deutscher Präventionstag (German Prevention Congress). The German Prevention Congress is Europe’s largest congress on crime prevention. And I'm in. Together with Harald, I will be presenting Kleinanzeigen's consumer protection initiatives. The "Initiative Sicherer Autokauf im Internet (ISAK)" provides essential guidance on safe online car purchases, helping consumers avoid scams and fraud. This initiative has been running for many years, with mobile.de, AutoScout24 GmbH, ADAC and the police among the founding members. For some years now, Kleinanzeigen has also been part of this initiative. Our "Initiative Sicher Handeln" is quite young: It is made up of partners such as RISK IDENT and Deutschland sicher im Netz e.V. (DsiN) and is about online fraud. Our common goal is to promote safety awareness and effective crime prevention strategies. We recently reached more than 50 million people (statistics!) with the results of a survey on identity theft. And of course we also explained what you need to look out for to avoid becoming a victim yourself. With both initiatives, we're committed to building a safer, more informed society. And this is more necessary than ever as fraudsters also benefit from the rapid development of #AI. #CrimePrevention #SichererAutokauf #SicherHandeln

The current volume of feature films cannot be sustained in movie theaters. Five years from now theatrical releases will be fewer, in part because of traumatic market effects, in part because of proactive and constructive selection, nurturing and curation of projects and their audiences. Successful cinema experiences must be highly engaging to attract audiences, adding work for exhibitors, distributors, and producers, but offering growth potential for unique films. Audiences appreciation for quality storytelling creates opportunities for strong authorial voices, moving beyond traditional categories and fostering a sustainable cross-platform business models. Theatrical exhibition can still play a significant role, including with Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. Collaborative approaches in production, distribution, and exhibition offer an opportunity to enhance industry resilience, reduce dependence on traditional exhibition and streaming platforms, and strengthen local industries. Virtual Production and Generative AI are transforming filmmaking. The entertainment sector, as an early adopter, can influence AI applications and advocate for relevant legislation. Rapid development is influenced by local factors like infrastructure and training availability. We will understand filmmaking more as a mastery of the principles of audiovisual storytelling than as the ability to produce a moving image. The industry must adapt together, or risk being left behind. AI advancements in advertising and content recommendation will increase competition in Connected TV. Despite potential dystopian outcomes, consumers will likely have a positive experience. Surprisingly, theatrical exhibition may also benefit. Dare Devil - I've been covering the endeavours of PHILIPP PLEIN for almost ten years now. (I've even written a book about the German entrepreneur published by Bastei Lübbe AG and available as audio book on Audible spoken by Mathias Grimm.) Still, he keeps me interested. Why? He dares to challenge the big brands. He is continously evolving and not afraid to make mistakes. One of his latest projects: luxury watches with whom he goes after the likes of Richard Mille and Hublot. After having launched the crypto king with an entry price of around 2900 Euros last year, he's now unveiled four models that cost between 45.000 and 49.000 Euros each. Together with Timex Group, Plein has come up with flying tourbillons and cases made of forged carbon. When I met him in Milan, I've had the feel that Plein, who's not a watch expert, had studied hard to be able to present the technical details accurately. "When someone tells us that we aren't a watchmaker and have no history, we can now proudly and with confidence say: 'Look what we have!'" Guess how one of the new models is called? Right, Dare Devil! Are we swimming in a red ocean? I just returned from the #nexttv congress in London, and the trend is clear. Suppose you carefully read the financial reports and listen to the relevant podcasts. In that case, you should be able to tell: everyone is losing money, most of the D2C are bleeding,and the telcos are on the edge of losing or already with their toes in the water, so what next? How to move on? How is the future going to look like? There will be a room just for the big ones; OTT is complicated, and the content rights cost fortune, so therefore : A. Mergers on the vendor's side, BE,FE CDNs, the trend is clear, and mergers are a must B. Telcos must have better synergies on common elements like CDNs, HE, and operations and differentiate themselves on content offering and maybe the FE applications. C. The broadcaster/content owners are the dominant players since they have something the others don’t have, which is the real differentiator. D. The smart TV players are the ones behind the scenes, gradually taking over and starting to act as the super aggregators. There are super exciting models like the Vidda ones from #Hisense. #LG, #Samsung, and #Google are also there. So, how is the future going to look? No one can tell, but TV/video is a must for everyone and will survive. The question is, will you swim in the red or the blue one?

This morning, Dirk Voigtländer and I presented ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE’s key financial results for the first quarter of 2024 and we can clearly say: Our strong start to the year shows that we are on the right track. In 2023, we have set a new course both operationally and strategically. In the first quarter, we are now seeing the first clear effects of our efficiency measures with Group revenues increasing by 6% and adjusted EBITDA growing by 35% year-on-year. The advertising business, which is particularly important for us, is continuing to recover – especially #Joyn is growing strongly. This shows that our strategic focus on digital reach pays off. At the same time, the Commerce & Ventures segment once again recorded significant double-digit revenue growth. Verivox GmbH and flaconi in particular are performing strongly. Even though the market and economic environment remains challenging, we are looking to 2024 with confidence and are therefore confirming our full-year outlook. We will continue to focus clearly on the strategically relevant business areas related to our Entertainment portfolio and continue our consistent management of costs and cash flows. Zeit uniquely keeps same subscription price for print and online readers (26 EUR/month). 👉 Product: Make your content "spannend", "lustig", "aktuell", "informativ" ZEIT has invested heavily in its newsroom (from 90 to 470 journalists). The content is no longer organized in the classical categories (Politics, Business,...), but much more thematic, with various new topics as Family, Green, X,... ZEIT now publishes 16 magazines. 👉 Location & promotion: Meet your readers where they are ZEIT is engaging with younger readers on TikTok. "Spending by video-on-demand (SVOD) platforms will reach €10 billion in Europe’s major TV markets in 2024. The figure overtakes the investment made by the region’s commercial broadcasters in original and acquired content. (...) The answer from the broadcasters has been to intensifying their focus on streaming strategies, even though their content spending budgets have reduced by 19% since 2016. (...) However, Ampere Analysis warns that content spending strategies should not be the only consideration; broadcasters must also prioritise the transition of audiences to streaming to ensure their long-term relevance. This involves investing in their video-on-demand platforms, expanding content libraries, enhancing digital advertising capabilities, experimenting with content release strategies across linear and VOD, and tailoring content output to cater to younger demographics." #streaming
