Digital Transformations and Climate Change: Futures, Infrastructures, and Data Dennis Eckhardt and Kathrin Eitel would like to invite you to submit an abstract for their special issue on «Digital Transformations and Climate Change: Futures, Infrastructures, and Data».This issue aims to investigate how digital processes and climate change interact with and influence each other. To achieve this, they invite contributions for an open-access issue in the Kulturanthropologie Notizen (peer-reviewed + OA). They encourage submissions that adopt a cultural anthropological and STS perspective, underpinned by ethnographic insights that scrutinize futures, infrastructures, and data. Multimodal approaches to the topic are welcome. 🌍🛰️ The Schweizerische Akademie der Technischen Wissenschaften SATW has published a new study highlighting how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help reduce the impacts of climate change in Switzerland. Empa researcher Gerrit Kuhlmann explains in a case study how satellite-based earth observations and AI models can be used to efficiently monitor greenhouse gas emissions and quickly identify emission hotspots. The study emphasizes that the precise and timely processing of large datasets by AI is crucial for identifying major greenhouse gas emitters and tracking progress towards a net-zero society. This is a significant step in meeting the requirements of the Paris Agreement. According to Kuhlmann, the development of models for a global monitoring system for greenhouse gases requires access to global earth observation data. "Access to the services of the European Copernicus program is crucial for Switzerland in order to be able to continue research in this area." Virtual Culture talks to Sorin Marti about the hardly visible but essential work of data stewards in digital projects that promote cultural heritage and make it more visible, accessible, and reusable. Sorin reminds us that ➡ in the context of cultural heritage all data is messy, even more so if you collaborate with more than one GLAM institution. ➡ it is key to (possibly) define workflows before you start to collect and organize data that is expected to be shown in a frontend. ➡ it is important to promote standard formats and free ware instead of commercial solutions; it's the best guarantee (you can get) to keep data reusable. This Saturday, June 22, from 17h -24h (CEST), the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin will host the event "Intertwined Futures: Climate Crisis in Europe and Latin America" (Verschränkte Zukünfte: Klimakrise in Europa und Lateinamerika). This event is part of the “Long Night of the Sciences” (Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften), a well-established public relations and science communication activity in Germany. During this annual event, major scientific institutions open their doors to the public, offering lectures and demonstrations to showcase their research topics. The focus of the event will be on the intertwined futures of Europe and Latin America in the context of the global energy and climate crisis. Central to the discussions will be how Europe relies on Africa and Latin America to bridge fossil fuel supply gaps and utilize these regions for renewable energy production. The debates will address the asymmetrical nature of these energy and climate policies, where Europe benefits from clean energy while Africa and Latin America bear the social and environmental costs. The event will feature the participation of Bianca Tavolari (FGV/ Cebrap/Mecila), in the panel “Neo-Industrialisierung, Convivialidade e desigualdade und Sonstenibilidad de la vida”, at 21h (CEST). We also want to highlight that the video documentary “Sentipensando la crisis climática (Feeling/thinking the climate crisis)” will be shown in a repeat loop in room 004, which can be entered at any time, from 5 p.m. onwards. If you are reusing data available on our platform in an innovative way, we suggest considering to apply for the National Prize for Open Research Data (ORD Prize). that has been awarded by the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences since 2023. It is part of the Action Plan "Open Research Data" implemented by the Academies as part of the National Strategy for Open Research Data. This new prize aims to recognize researchers for innovative practices in the field of Open Research Data (ORD) and aims to promote the transition to open research practices. 📻 📺 📰 Is the media coverage of the climate-mobility-nexus changing? I and other experts, practicioners, etc. have spoken with to SWR radio about the interlinkages between climate change and human mobility (in German) - and I think this whole radio feature has become remarkable as it is very differentiated and many aspects such as forced immobility are also addressed.  Generally, I think that the media's approach to the topic is slowly changing - away from securitised alarmism towards reporting that does justice to the complexity. Our goal is to enhance researchers' ability to work with data from museum collections, thus allowing us to expand our knowledge of history and predict the future of the Earth and humanity. 🌏 Take this bushbuck, for example. When, how, and by whom did it become part of our collection? Data like this is contained in all objects in our collection, and our archives even include expedition diaries with additional details. Overall, our more than 30 million collection objects also represent a huge network of data. Specifically, the autor argues that a critical application of CBPR offers pathways for addressing epistemic injustice embedded in academic institutions and traditional research processes. 📣 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 👩‍💻 Together with many researchers from Europe, we are completing a landmark project on the 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗶𝗱 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀! The NextSim project is a three-year project funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (𝗕𝗠𝗕𝗙) with an overall budget of almost 4 million euros. ⚡ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: Developing low-emission and low-noise aircraft requires not only 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 and extremely 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗛𝗣𝗖 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, but also appropriate software. In the NextSim project, we have brought together expertise from the fields of high-performance computing and numerical aerodynamics with industrial experience in aircraft design in order to increase the performance of the newly developed CFD software from 𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗔, 𝗗𝗟𝗥 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝘂𝘀 (𝗖𝗢𝗗𝗔) and prepare it for use on modern, heterogeneous 𝗛𝗣𝗖 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲. 💻 ⚡ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹: To significantly improve the efficiency of computer simulations of the flows around aircraft, to demonstrate this through a series of complex aerodynamic test cases and to make this capability available to the European aerospace industry. The freedom of #journalists is a vital element for accountability and good governance. On #WorldPressFreedomDay, I want to pay tribute to all the journalists who take personal risks to report and investigate - especially where corruption, conflict, human rights and the environment are at stake. Quality information and reportage is essential for #thinktanks and researchers in the field of policy and international affairs, like myself and many of you on Linked-In. This informs our work in trying to improve the basis for multilateral, government, corporate and civil society decision-making on issues including #peace #economics #energysecurity and #climatechange. In 2018, Chatham House awarded its annual Prize to the Committee to Protect Journalists (do check out their work https://cpj.org/thetorch/). Tragically, since then, conditions for journalists have only worsened. Constraints, and in far too many cases, imprisonment and targetted killings across the World are on the rise. In its latest index, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) finds press freedom increasingly threatened by political authorities, as well as the use of #artificialintelligence in spreading disinformation for political purposes (https://lnkd.in/eF8djr-A). A new UNESCO report found that at least 44 journalists investigating environmental issues had been killed over the last 15 years, of which only 5 have resulted in convictions (see below). And in #Gaza and the #WestBank, the killing of journalists has become normalized, with at least 107 dead since October (watch this video by IMS (International Media Support) https://lnkd.in/eR4kjeXi ). The list of countries repressing press freedom is long and includes many so-called democratic, as well as authoritarian states, and it is something that should be of deep concern to all those in #academia #research and #policy. https://lnkd.in/eagav92J
