In their current form, our food systems are ill-equipped to sustainably support the growing needs of our planet, while actively driving biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution. We need to reshape our food systems to address these global challenges. We’ll discuss this in a side event during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York that is starting next week. Join us in-person in New York or virtually! The future of school meals is plant-based! The UK Children's Parliament has endorsed ProVeg UK 's Plant-Based School Plates campaign at London Climate Action Week’s Extreme Hangout. 🇬🇧 During a fireside chat with vegan recipe creators BOSH! by Henry Firth & Ian Theasby, the former Children’s Prime Minister, Harry Acheampong, endorsed the widespread adoption of plant-based foods, stating “We all need to think about incorporating more plant-based meals into our diets.” This was seconded by the new Children’s Prime Minister, Clarke Dearson, who praised our School Plates Programme, saying “All schools should embrace the inclusion of plant-based ingredients in their menus. To get more kids eating more plant-based at school you need to create meals like plant-based ‘Alien Mash'.” 🌱 We loved seeing such enthusiasm for the campaign and sustainable diets from these passionate young people, and of course, Clarke’s suggestion of ‘alien mash’ - watch this space! 👽 Read more ⬇️ https://hubs.ly/Q02GlCpf0 #ProVeg #SchoolPlates #ProVegUK

There needs to be a paradigm shift in the way we produce, distribute, and consume food. Food systems account for about ⅓ of total GHG emissions. They are also the leading cause of deforestation and biodiversity loss, with 70% of the projected loss of terrestrial biodiversity attributable to agricultural expansion. We need to reshape our food systems to address these global challenges. We’ll discuss this in a side event during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York that is starting next week. Join us in person in New York or virtually! Want to know how to persuade Chinese consumers to eat more plant-based foods? 🌱🇨🇳 According to our recent survey of 1,000 people living in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the positive health benefits of plant-based diets are the biggest motivators for incorporating more plants into their diets, with 46% citing this (and 58% of 45-60-year-olds). Of these benefits, the fact that plant-based diets lower the risk of developing antibiotic resistance was shown to be particularly compelling, while other benefits such as lower rates of diseases like cancer, heart disease, and obesity, as well as the higher bioavailability of calcium in plant-based foods, were also convincing reasons for our participants to make the shift to plant-based eating. 💚 Want to discover more insights like this? Did you know that limiting global warming to 1.5°C to avoid the worst impacts of global warming will not be possible if we leave the food system unaddressed, even if current fossil fuel emissions were completely halted? 🤯 But there is something we can do: a shift towards more plant-based diets can reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Swipe to see how much CO2 emissions can be reduced following a plant-based diet. The reduction can be especially significant for Western meat-heavy diets! 🌍 We want more people and organisations to have access to data showing the impact of diets to understand the challenges we face and work on solutions to them. To support finding feasible multi-problem solutions for a sustainable food system transformation, we’ve developed Food System Data. Food System Data is designed to deliver the most credible, up-to-date figures about the current food system and the necessary transition towards plant-rich diets, in a straightforward, uncomplicated way. 🌱 Access our data sheets based on the latest evidence to showcase the impact of diets on the environment, animals, and health here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eQNZJkZ2 #FoodSystemData #ProVeg #FoodSystems

India is poised to become an ingredient hub for the global alternative protein market. Last weekend, we joined India's largest plant-based event, the Vegan India Conference 2024! ✨ ProVeg's International Director Tim Polkowski joined a panel discussion on plant-based regulations in different countries and export potential for the Indian plant-based F&B sector. As a major producer of plant-based raw materials, India has huge potential to develop into an exporter of raw materials and a manufacturing hub for high-protein products. We are looking forward to doing more in India in collaboration with other mission-aligned organisations like The Good Food Institute India. Vegan First #India #ProVeg #VeganIndiaConference2024
