These days I am really worried about the future. Not only for the future of my own children, but especially for those who must suffer from climate change in the short term. For 12 months in a row now, the Earth's global surface temperature has been 1.5 degrees Celsius or higher than the average between 1850 and 1900, as observed by Copernicus ECMWF. This indicates that climate change is accelerating and that our global goal of keeping global warming below 2 °C is becoming unrealistic. While there is room in the scenarios to stay above 1.5 °C global warming for some time, we have hit the mark too early and time is running out to avoid tipping points. It is hard to grasp how serious this is and what it means. But it's no reason to bury our heads in the sand, and we have no choice but to fight harder and more decisively against climate change to prevent increasingly dire consequences of global warming. But we must finally start to act. The most urgent short-term items have remained the same for years. This is what we need to do most urgently this year: 1. Stop methane leaks in oil and gas fields It's a simple measure without large investments, but it avoids one of the most serious sources of greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to regulation and enforcement in countries such as China, USA, India and Russia, governments need to put pressure on Iran and Turkmenistan to stop methane leaks. 2. Tax fossil fuels right Indirect and direct subsidies to fossil fuels must stop immediately, and fossil fuels must be taxed fairly according to the damage they cause to the environment, health and society. Realistic taxation of the damage done by fossil fuels makes their prices unattractive and saves governments the money they need to spend on environmental and health systems. 3. Invest in clean energy sources Wind and solar will be the main drivers of green grids and green heat. Their acceleration is already astonishing, but companies and governments need to invest even more and secure production capacity and guarantees. The potential of hydropower must also be harnessed. 4+5, please see comments... We will continue to work hard to find and deploy even more solutions for our the energy sector. In the bigger picture, it is high time for governments and business to get serious about changing our practices. #climate #climatecrisis #globalwarming #cleantech
