🔍 What is the ongoing IPBES Business and Biodiversity Assessment about? The Business and Biodiversity Assessment is a groundbreaking methodological evaluation designed to help businesses better understand their relationship with nature. Its aim? To better inform policymakers and help businesses measure and mitigate their impacts on nature. By supporting the global biodiversity goals and sustainable development, this assessment report will be a vital tool for creating a more sustainable future.🌱 The Assessment will: 📌 Offer a typology of methods to identify and measure nature´s contributions to businesses and the impacts of business on biodiversity. 📌 Assess the appropriateness of those methods for different types of companies and different levels of decision-making within companies. 📌 Offer options for action: Provide actionable options for businesses to manage dependencies and impacts in response to both financial needs and transformative change for societal and nature's benefits. 📌 Identify changes in the enabling environment that would support business in achieving transformative change. Science & Policy for People & Nature: Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services | #Biodiversity
Info
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body, established by member States in 2012. It provides policymakers with objective scientific assessments about the state of knowledge regarding the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people, as well as the tools and methods to protect and sustainably use these vital natural assets. Our mission is to strengthen knowledge foundations for better policy through science, for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. The work of IPBES can be broadly grouped into four complementary areas: • Assessments: On specific themes (e.g. “Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production”); methodological issues (e.g. Scenarios and Modelling); and at both the regional and global levels (“Global Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services”). • Policy Support: Identifying policy-relevant tools and methodologies, facilitating their use, and catalyzing their further development. • Building Capacity & Knowledge: Identifying and meeting the priority capacity, knowledge and data needs of our member States, experts and stakeholders. • Communications & Outreach: Ensuring the widest reach and impact of our work.

Do financial institutions depend on ecosystem services? And how are these institutions identifying and measuring this exposure? Luis Mundaca and Jan-Niklas Heintz estimate the nature dependencies of large European banks and thereby highlight the critical importance of ecosystem services in sustaining economic activities. As businesses increasingly recognise their reliance on biodiversity, the need for clear and consistent measurement approaches has never been greater. 🌍 The Business and Biodiversity Assessment currently underway by IPBES will support business in these endeavours. This methodological evaluation aims to: 📌 Offer a typology of methods used to identify and measure nature´s contributions to businesses and businesses' impacts on biodiversity. And for the next step of this very important assessment, YOUR contributions are crucial! Participate in the ONLY external review for this Assessment and contribute to shaping the tools that will inform businesses in their decision-making for increased sustainability: https://lnkd.in/eNyNQpK6 📆 Deadline: 17 September 2024 Read the full article “Banking on Ecosystem Services” by Luis Mundaca and Jan-Niklas Heintz here: https://lnkd.in/dfEYRxvA
