Info
The European Community Foundation Initiative (ECFI) is a collaborative initiative committed to strengthening and promoting the community foundation movement in Europe. ECFI is hosted by the German Association of Foundations. We will work with Community Foundations (CFs) and Community Foundation Support Organizations (CFSOs) primarily through facilitating and stimulating interactions to enable learning, knowledge-building and empowerment. ECFI is also engaged in the mapping and analysis of CF activities and in disseminating information that will facilitate development of the field. We strive to be a central point of contact for wider engagement within the global CF movement.

We are thrilled to share that Kamil Szlosek represented ECFI as part of the European delegation at the United Philanthropy Forum Annual Conference in St. Louis. The event was an incredible platform for learning, connecting, and exchanging ideas with fellow professionals in the philanthropy sector. The conference offered valuable insights into the dynamic American philanthropic landscape, highlighting the strong role of community foundations as local leaders and infrastructure supporters. It was inspiring to witness the power of collaboration and the impact of effective communication of values. A special thank you to our colleagues from Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association and the Mott Foundation for making this happen. We also extend our gratitude to all who were involved in the preparation of this event. We look forward to applying these learnings and fostering meaningful connections within our community. #Philanthropy #CommunityFoundations #UPF2024 #Networking #Learning #Transformation
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of the European delegation to the United Philanthropy Forum Annual Conference in St. Louis. This event was a fantastic platform for learning, sharing, and connecting with fellow professionals in the field of philanthropy in the United States. The conference provided valuable insights into the latest trends and changes within the American philanthropy sector as a whole. Key takeaways include the importance of effective communication of values, embracing change, and the powerful transformation of systems by transformed people. We delved into the need to let go to let new opportunities arise and explored Change Horizons. We talked about infrastructural organisations, or Philanthropy Serving Organisations as our colleagues from the US would call them, as supporters, leaders, advocates, and also as organisations that challenge and "push" our constituents for change, to mention a few . A special thank you to Kristen Ruff, Senior Vice President of Philanthropy New York and a board member of the United Philanthropy Forum, for being my buddy during the conference. Kristen's guidance and support were invaluable in navigating among all networking opportunities. Her insights and encouragement made the experience even more enriching. It was inspiring to learn how strong the position of community foundations is within the American philanthropic sector. They are not only members of this rich network but also play a role as local leaders, providing infrastructural support. For example, they create alliances like the Alliance of Illinois Community Foundations and the Western Kansas Alliance of Community Foundations. These organisations act as conveners, advocates, and leaders, pushing their constituents towards meaningful change. New friends and connections are one of the most cherished outcomes of this conference. I was delighted to share this experience with my fellow European colleagues Lucía Domínguez Cisneros, Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association; Gemma Instrall, Association of Charitable Foundations; Ricardo Garcia, Centro Português de Fundações and Daria Rybalchenko, National Network of Local Philanthropy Development. You were the best companions on this journey! I look forward to continuing these conversations and collaborations. On my way back home, I had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Luria Leopold, Associate Director at the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, The Graduate Center, CUNY. Our conversations were enlightening as we exchanged insights on current trends and shifts within the field of community foundations. Thank you to everyone at the United Philanthropy Forum for organizing such a transformative event. I am excited to apply these learnings and insights to my work at the European Community Foundation Initiative. #Philanthropy #CommunityFoundations #UPF2024 #Networking #Learning #Transformation

We wish we could have invited you all to Poland! Not only because Zywiec is a beautiful place in the Polish mountains and not because the famous Polish beer is made there. The reason was the wonderful, third already, Jarmark, a traditional meeting, a kind of market, organized on June 29 by Żywiecka Fundacja Rozwoju (Żywiec Development Foundation) This year's meeting called "Jarmark na Zablocie in the Spirit of Sustainable Development Goals" was an opportunity to have fun and integrate the local community, but also to promote values related to sustainable development and ecology. Education through fun? Yes! it succeeded! Lots of activities aimed at different age groups. For the youngest there was a play about Lynx, which taught children the importance of environmental protection through play. A neighborhood swap was a treat for entire families. Residents could bring unwanted toys, clothes, books and other items to find them a new home. There were quizzes, contests and educational games to learn more about how to take care of our planet and community. A fun day it was! Congratulations! And we recommend you to watch the photos and get inspired!

We could not be more excited for what comes next. Our commitment to enabling the #communityfoundations field to thrive and meaningfully shape Europe's future has never been stronger. Here's to the impactful journey ahead! 🚀 James Magowan Kathrin Dombrowski Kamil Szlosek Anja Boellhoff Francesca Mereta
