EPoSS, the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration, is an industry-driven policy initiative, defining R&D and innovation needs as well as policy requirements related to Smart Systems Integration and integrated Micro- and Nanosystems. EPoSS brings together European private and public stakeholders in order to create an enduring basis for structuring initiatives, for co-ordinating and bundling efforts, for setting up sustainable structures of a European Research Area on Smart Systems Integration. The initiative is of immediate importance in view of defining research and technology priorities for the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, for raising more critical mass as well as resources and for coordinating different initiatives (national, regional, EUREKA, European public funding and industry).

A crucial step towards Europe becoming a global leader in AI innovation. Today, the amendment to the EuroHPC Regulation to set up AI factories enters into force, enabling the creation of a new pillar of activities for the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). The AI Factories will consist of dedicated AI-supercomputers to facilitate fast machine learning, in particular for the training of General Purpose AI (GPAI) models, which require significant computing capacity. Expected to be deployed in 2025, the AI factories will also offer a one-stop shop for startups and innovators and enable the development of powerful GPAI models to underpin a variety of emerging AI applications. This will also play a key role in boosting European excellence in AI and that ensuring Europe leads the way in global advances, ensuring responsible and ethical innovation. 📢 New calls to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor industry! Today the Chips Joint Undertaking has announced the opening of calls to support chips R&I initiatives in photonics, competence centres, and a semiconductor cloud-based design platform. Worth €325 million, this round of calls will further support Europe’s microchips industry by establishing a pilot line for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), a step forward for the next generation of high-performance computers, high-speed communications, and data centres. The funding will also support the creation, roll-out and networking of 'chips competence centres’ in participating states. These competence centres will provide access to technical expertise and experimentation in semiconductors, helping companies, SMEs in particular, to improve design capabilities and develop their skills. Ultimately, the new chips calls will fund a project to create a cloud-based online design platform that will allow users, particularly academia, start-ups and SMEs, to design and develop their new chips, and to help bring their designs to market.
