I have found that emotional intelligence is always needed with any type of feedback. It should be a practical approach and not once off. What makes feedback difficult is when it is not given often as such a constructive feedback becomes stressful to both the giver and the reciever. There are different approaches one can use to relay the information, one important factor is creating a safe environment. Find a place that is neutral to both parties. Be comfortable with outburst of emotions - humans are emotional beings and that should not be minimised especially if the feedback is based on performance. Finally follow up with measurable and realistic actions. That would create a healthy culture of healthy communication in the organisation.

In case the nature of the feedback is very delicate/emotional, I find it mandatory to separate the initial feedback from a discussion on the feedback. More specifically, in a first meeting the feedback is downloaded to the employee, emphasizing that today is not the time to discuss them - however, set up a follow-up meeting immediatly, where the recipient of the feedback has the chance to express their thoughts - after they had a chance to digest-

I believe even though some people may not want to hear it, it is okay to give feedback outside of the created areas for it. It is not always useful to wait until the next feedback session or what so ever. However, it is essential to formulate such feedback in a constructive manner. Do not criticize. Instead a Plus-Delta approach should be used. Talking about what was good and what could be improved. Formulating the negatives as improvement areas with potential solutions proves to be more effective.
