Mary Claire Molloy gathered information on at least 227 family annihilation cases in the U.S. since Jan. 1, 2020, for an IndyStar investigation. These cases involve a relative killing at least two types of immediate family members — a spouse or partner, children, parents, or siblings. The killers, predominantly males, also died in nearly two-thirds of the cases. The most extreme examples of domestic violence, the 758 people killed in these cases represent a fraction of the more than 15,000 men, women and children who die each year by the hand of a loved one or relative.
