The country's electric grid has transformed over the past two decades. Once the backbone of energy production, coal-generated electricity has dwindled, giving way to natural gas as the top source of electricity generation. Meanwhile, renewable alternatives, though progressing at a more leisurely pace, have made significant strides.
At the start of the century, coal supplied about half of the country's electricity. Today, that share has plummeted below 17%. Nearly 400 plants have shuttered in the past two decades, including a combined 60 retirements in Ohio and Pennsylvania, the states with the most closures. Currently, around 220 coal plants remain operational, with several already slated for retirement within the next decade.
Enter an address to locate the nearest operating coal plants and view their carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) output for 2023. Operating dates reflect when each plant's first generator began producing energy.
Some emissions data may be blank or incomplete for plants considered "operating" but partially out of service and not expected to return to full service within the next calendar year.
The size of the circles represents the amount of carbon dioxide emissions.

A data analysis shows carbon emissions from coal power plants halved in the past decade. The EPA projects nearly all such plants will close by 2045.
The Biden administration says the new rules will reduce pollution from fossil fuel power plants, fighting climate change and improving public health.
Under a new EPA rule, coal plants are being forced to capture smokestack emissions or be shut down, a change that could reduce emissions by 90%.
