This drink is similar to lassi, made tangy with buttermilk (or yogurt), mango and spoonful of lime juice. If you want to make a nondairy version, use almond milk or rice beverage.

Ingredients

Yield:One 16-ounce or two 8-ounce servings
  • 1heaped cup ripe mango, fresh or frozen
  • 1cup buttermilk or plain low-fat yogurt, or for a nondairy version almond or rice beverage
  • 2teaspoons mild honey, such as clover
  • 1cup fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1½ to 2teaspoons freshly squeezed lime juice (to taste)
  • 6raw almonds (untoasted)
  • 2 or 3ice cubes if desired

  1. Step 1

    Combine all of the ingredients in a blender, and blend at high speed until smooth.

Tip

Added grated fresh ginger for a little zing. Terrific! Tip: when you buy and have more fresh ginger than you need (and who doesn’t?), break it into small pieces and freeze. Then, as you want it, pull a piece right out of the freezer and grate it directly into your dish - delivers fresh ginger flavor great for smoothies, stir frys, fruit pie, etc.

I'd love to get some insight re: the glycemic index of these smoothie recipes from the authors, as well as modifications to limit the sugar load (adding fiber and protein?) that others may have tried, and think work well.

This time, I had loads of fresh blueberries and good frozen mango--results were much better than my first attempt. I also used 3T almond meal, which I had on hand, instead of 6 whole almonds. To sweeten, I chopped up 2 medjool dates--one would have done. I agree that the lime juice is key. Didn't have enough soy yogurt, so I supplemented with soy milk and added some ice cubes to thin. I'll keep making this one until my mango runs out; I hope the berries last through winter.

Also very good swapping banana for mango and dropping the honey.

I liked it, 10-year-old detested it. I used almond butter, which I assume uses toasted nuts, which may be why. (I KNOW, "follow the recipe the first time!" and "The recipe said not to use toasted almonds!") I also added some chia gel in hopes that it would still have a nice texture after sitting in my hydro flask on my desk, and that worked well. Drinking it now, 3 hours later, mine has a nut-buttery blueberry pie flavor.

I made it today again, exactly as written (no sweetener though), and 10-year-old loved it. It was the toasted almonds he hated. The raw almond flavor disappears but adds a little protein when combined with the milk.

I did 1/2 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 cup frozen mango, 1 ripe peach, 1/2 cup almond milk. It was delicious.

My blender couldn’t handle the lack of liquid so I added a cup of water and it was still great. My kids loved it!

This recipe basically changed my life. Buttermilk is now my go-to smoothie liquid. My favorite: banana, frozen mango, frozen strawberries and a good handful of spinach.

It was really good. I am allergic to nuts so I didn’t add those but I added everything else. It was a bit to thick and my blender was getting stuck so I added some apple cider ( or you could put orange juice) and it immediately loosened up and the consistency was much better.

This was delicious, but a little thick as written and I needed to thin it out with a few splashes of milk. Also subbed lemon juice for lime cuz I didn't have any, and it still tasted great.

I keep making this because it's so good, but the fruits must be sweet and flavorful. Aiming toward perfection, I can't resist tweaking the recipe a bit each time, and I liked today's, using 4 teaspoons of maple syrup instead of honey. There are good non-dairy yogurts now--I used Kite Hill but So Delicious also works well (plain, non-sweetened. Only problem is that yogurt makes the mix hard to blend, so this time I added melted ice cubes (aka water)--about 4 T.

Since my note of 4 years ago, I've continued to fuss with this smoothie. Today, my fruits were not at their prime and I felt the lime juice didn't come through the thick yogurt body enuf. The flavor was too soft. After tasting, I removed a ½ cup of the mix and poured in ½ cup of fresh orange juice instead. That helped a lot and next time I might eliminate the yogurt/milk entirely and substitute a whole cup of orange juice. I should have added ginger too, as suggested by Renee.

Very enjoyable. Used non fat yogurt plus some non fat organic milk for volume. Didn't have almonds but used a tsp of chia seeds and a few small ice cubes.

I made this without the almonds because I didn't have them and without the lime juice, which I imagine would have been nice. It's great! I had to thin it with a little water.

Substituted 2 tablespoons chai seeds for the almonds. Did half cup cherries and half cup blueberries.

Made as directed, used almond milk and added ice for thickness. Used local fresh mangoes as sweet as could be but the blueberry-mango combination was blah and the ice watered it down to make it even more blah. Also, the 6 almonds added unpleasant random chewy particles to the smoothie.

Eliminate ice. Add two cups yogurt and one 9.6 oz can of mango nectar, makes two smoothies

do you peel the ginger before you freeze it?

Fran - I share your concerns about glycemic issues. You certainly can omit the honey and also reduce the serving size of the fruits and add in greens. Spinach does not impart a strong or conflicting flavor and will add some different nutrients.

This is so delicious !!! Highly recommend . I just happened to have all the ingredients and decided to try it . The outcome far exceeded my expectations . Tastiest smoothie ever . I used almond milk and was delighted with this dairy free concoction.
