Abstract: Reliable plasma viscosity measurements are required for cardiovascular risk factor assessment. This study was designed to examine the influence of tourniquet pressure and duration on plasma viscosity measurement with a coaxial cylinder at 37{}^\circ C. Plasma viscosity was evaluated at low (40 mm Hg) and high (mean arterial blood pressure plus 10 mm Hg) tourniquet pressure and at two time intervals following (0–1 and 4–5 min) of tourniquet application in 38 healthy adults. Longer duration of tourniquet application was accompanied by a significant increase in plasma viscosity at both low (1.356{}\pm{} 0.067 mPa s versus 1.393{}\pm{} 0.067 mPa s (p= …0.0001 )) and high (1.321{}\pm{} 0.071 mPa s versus 1.430{}\pm{} 0.086 mPa s (p= 0.0002 )) tourniquet pressures. Plasma viscosity values were not influenced by the magnitude of tourniquet pressure. The accuracy of plasma viscosity measurements can be improved by sample acquisition within 1 min following tourniquet application. Show more

Abstract: The B-vitamins, including vitamins B12, B6, B1, B2, niacin (B3) and folate (B9), have been implicated as protective risk factors against cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. This commentary reviews the evidence to support protective relations of these vitamins, including consideration of known vitamin deficiency syndromes, theories of underlying biologic mechanisms, and the epidemiologic evidence. We also comment on the potential benefits and harms of vitamin supplementation as well as make recommendations for the direction of future studies.

Abstract: This study investigated the impact of oral fluid intake on blood rheology of 17 healthy adults following a 12–14 hour overnight fast from food and drink. An oral fluid load of 500 ml was consumed every 30 minutes for 2 hours. Blood viscosity values at shear rates of 1, 10 and 100 s−1 were reduced (p<0.05 to p<0.01) at 30 and 120 minutes following hydration; however, these differences were not significant after hematocrit correction. With fluid intake, both uncorrected and corrected viscous component of blood viscoelasticity at oscillatory shear rate of 1 s−1 and at a constant frequency of 2 …Hz were reduced (p<0.05 to p<0.001) at all time points as compared to fasting values. The corrected elastic component of blood viscoelasticity increased 90 minutes after hydration (p<0.05). An overnight fast is accompanied by rheological abnormalities that are altered by fluid intake. Abstract: Context: It is currently not known whether dietary intakes of folate and vitamins B12 and B6, co-factors in the methylation of homocysteine, protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Objective: To examine the association between risk of incident Alzheimer’s disease and dietary intakes of folate, vitamin B-12, and vitamin B-6. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Geographically defined biracial Chicago community. Participants: 1,041 residents, aged 65 years and older, initially free of Alzheimer’s disease and followed a median 3.9 years for the development of incident disease. Main Outcome Measure: Probable Alzheimer’s disease identified through structured clinical neurological evaluation using standardized criteria. Results: A total …of 162 persons developed incident Alzheimer’s disease during follow-up. In logistic regression models adjusted for age, sex, race, education, cognitive activities, APOE-ε4, and dietary intakes of vitamin E in food and total niacin, there was no association between risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and quintiles of folate intake or of vitamin B-12 intake. The adjusted odds ratio was 1.6 (95% confidence interval: 0.5, 5.2) for persons in the highest quintile of total folate intake (median of 752.7 μg/d) compared with persons in the lowest quintile of intake (median, 202.8 μg/d). Compared with persons in the first quintile of total vitamin B-12 intake (median, 3.1 μg/d) the odds ratio was 0.6 (95% confidence interval: 0.2, 1.6) for persons in the fifth quintile of intake (median, 20.6 μg/d). Intake of vitamin B-6 was not associated with incident Alzheimer’s disease after control for dietary intakes of vitamin E and total niacin. Conclusion: Dietary intakes of folate, vitamin B-12, or vitamin B-6 do not appear to be associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Show more
