The United States is plagued by an epidemic of gun violence that kills more than 40,000 Americans every year — but it does not have to be this way. California is proof. Over the last 30 years, thanks to our nation-leading, commonsense, data-driven gun laws, policies, and programs, we have transformed from a state with some of the highest rates of gun violence to one with some of the lowest.
When it comes to tackling gun violence, California is the blueprint.
The nine protection orders available in our state are an essential component of our successful gun violence reduction strategy as they can all include provisions to disarm a dangerous person. In recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Month, we released a new report that provides a guide and new data about California’s protection orders and the undeniably critical role they have played in our efforts to curb gun violence and save lives. The idea is simple: violent people should not wield weapons. As California Attorney General, I am proud to stand with survivors, uphold our gun laws, defend our protection orders, and protect our communities.
In solidarity,
Rob

Gun Laws Save Lives
![OGVP press conference](https://cdn.statically.io/img/content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2024/06/9623833/5502473/ogvp-press-conference_crop.jpg) California's gun laws save lives. Once 50% above average, California’s firearm homicide rate is now 33% below the rest of the United States. That’s thanks to a broad array of laws to protect communities, which include protection orders to safeguard survivors and disarm individuals perpetrating violence and abuse. This week, we released an important report that provides an in-depth look at California’s nine court protection order options, including information about how to obtain one and who is eligible.

Holding Ghost Gun Dealers Accountable
![Ghost gun press conference](https://cdn.statically.io/img/content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2024/06/9623831/ghost-gun-press-conference_original.jpg) The manufacture and sale of ghost gun kits has created a largely chaotic industry that is a massive threat to public safety. This week, we announced a judgment against three ghost gun manufacturers and retailers for allegedly violating state and federal laws governing firearms, as well as California consumer protection laws. The companies will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in civil penalties and are now permanently prohibited from manufacturing or selling unserialized ghost gun kits and firearm precursor parts in California. This is a big win for public health and safety in our state.

Protecting Access to Water
![Dripping Faucet](https://cdn.statically.io/img/content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2024/06/9623830/5502474/dripping-faucet_crop.jpg) During the height of the pandemic, many families were devastatingly impacted by illegal water shutoffs. This is simply unacceptable. This week, my office filed a motion asking the court to enter a stipulated judgment with the City of Calexico, resolving allegations of illegal water shutoffs and violations of the Water Shutoff Protection Act and the Water Arrearages Program. The right to access water is fundamental, and no family should have to endure the hardships of living without this basic necessity.

![Gavel](https://cdn.statically.io/img/content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2024/06/9623839/5502475/gavel_crop.jpg) This week, I announced the sentencing of Chris Vrame, who embezzled over $4.3 million from investors and a nonprofit. The victims of this embezzlement have been given back what was stolen and the guilty party has taken responsibility and been held responsible. This case was an excellent example of the justice system working how it was intended and I am proud of my team for all their work on this case.

Resource Corner: Your Water Access Rights
![Water utility payments alert](https://cdn.statically.io/img/content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2024/06/9623718/5502477/water-utility-payments-alert_crop.jpg) If you get behind on your water bill, you have options. Here are some things you can do:
Get Information from Your Water Provider: California law prohibits most water providers from shutting off your water unless your bill is 60 days overdue. The water provider must contact you by phone or mail at least seven business days before your water is shut off, and must post their water-shutoff policy on their website.
Talk to Your Water Provider About a Payment Plan: Most water providers must make an alternative payment plan available. You have a right to discuss options with your water provider to avoid a water shutoff.
Get Help Paying a Past Due Water Bill: Depending on your income, you may qualify for a one-time payment towards your water or wastewater bill through the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program. In addition, if you receive certain benefits such as CalFresh, Medi-Cal, or SSI, or if your income is less than 200% of the federal poverty level, your water provider must waive any interest charges you owe once every 12 months.
