After what was requested previously as a short acting education and preventative block this editor has uploaded a further copyright violation. May I suggest a more attention getting preventative sanction, please? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 20:56, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. The editor has been blocked again, this time for two weeks. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:42, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done removed the uploaded files, blocked from further uploads for a month, and requested that they undertake conversations in Com:VPC  — billinghurst sDrewth 05:56, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please elaborate the reason for this decision? The images I have uploaded are all free of copyrights and gave more insights for the particular pages. It feels that removing all of them is bit harsh without explaining reasonable facts.
I suggest to wikipedia team to re-consider the reporting strategy, before remove uploads or banning the user right away just because someone reported. Viru96 (talk) 05:11, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know is there a way to recover the uploads if this reporting is invalid @Billinghurst @Jeff G. Viru96 (talk) 05:15, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Picking three more or less at random:
  • File:MahamayaGirlsCollege crest.png: gives a source of https://mahamayagirlscollege.lk/school-crest/ (a link that doesn't work for me) and an unexplained date of 1932-01-14 (hard to say for what: it could be the date of a related design, but the graphic itself is clearly computer-generated so can't be from that era). Claims PD-US but gives no rationale, doesn't indicate anything about copyright status in Sri Lanka.
  • File:Dharmaraja College War Heroes' Memorial.jpg: Photo of a memorial, apparently in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has no freedom of panorama, so if the memorial is still copyrighted it is certainly not OK. Says {{Cc-zero}} and "author unknown" (an unlikely but not impossible combination that would require some evidence). Source given is just a domain (dharmaraja.lk), no specific URL so there is no way to check it.
  • File:Amarasiri Kalansuriya.jpg: photograph, dated 2023-04-01. Source is https://www.adaderana.lk/news/89496/veteran-actor-amarasiri-kalansuriya-passes-away. It's the first photo there. Described as PD-US (which frankly beggars belief, and no rationale is given). Why would this image be in the PD in the U.S. (or anywhere)? Source page says "Copyright ©2024 Ada Derana." No idea whether that is legit for the photo, but that's really neither here nor there: no reason to think it is PD or free-licensed.
So, I can't say that there is no possibility that any of Viru96's uploads are OK, but if I had been the one who sampled and saw this, I'd probably have said "just delete it all, and if there is something that's OK, or even some class of things that should be OK, the user can make a specific case for it in an undeletion request."
@Viru96: with all due respect, it looks like you are trying to upload a lot of different types of things, with a lot of different copyright issues. When your block expires, I strongly suggest that unless you want to undertake a "crash course" on copyright, public domain, valid licenses for Commons, etc. you confine yourself to some narrower area(s) for a while (giving you a chance to learn the rules about those areas), and maybe find a mentor who is willing to review your uploads for a while to see if you are getting it right. I strongly suggest that until you have a better grasp of this you not make assertions/guesses that things are in the public domain when the source says no such thing.
By the way, thank you for being generally clear about your sources, which made this much easier to sort out than it might otherwise have been. - Jmabel ! talk 06:28, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment @Viru96: When you have reputation for copyright violations, and I am not seeing metadata in images that indicates that they are yours, and I am seeing copyright violations; you are not going to have someone picking through your uploads on a case-by-case basis. As I asked, please take your conversations about your copyright problems, the deletions and your understandings to Com:VPC. That forum is the most likely to be able to support someone in repeated copyright problems.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:06, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Block review: Dronebogus

I blocked Dronebogus for 1 week to force them to disengage from this AN/U thread after I warned them that they were becoming disruptive. The triggering edits for the block are these three. As I am already far more involved in this mess than I'd care to be, I'd like some less/uninvolved admins to weigh in. Good block? Bad block? Too short? Thanks, The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 00:04, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd have issued a two week block. For sure, it's an appropriate one. Bedivere (talk) 02:35, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I dont feel like accusing other users of "shit stirring" is appropriate language for someone to use with the Block log. Regardless how one feel about him--Trade (talk) 17:52, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

oh yeah,
"""1
İngiliz Argosu
shit stirring
bilerek ortalığı karıştırma""""
https://tureng.com/tr/turkce-ingilizce/shit%20stirring
that "bilerek ortalığı karıştırma" actually means: "to cause confusion on purpose". but, this is google translate. i still believe we have words in english that not to use "sh.." word. so, that information make to come an idea my head. im gonna... give a warning to admin as a part of the community!! modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 18:04, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shit stirring is a relatively benign colloquialism, which it appears I incorrectly assumed is more well known than it is. Wiktionary defines it as "troublemaking, especially by provoking negative behavior from others", which I feel is an accurate description of their behavior leading to the block. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 19:53, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"shit" is bad word. end of the disccussion. modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 19:55, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I stand my point. It's still an vulgar and unprofessional thing to include in the logging Trade (talk) 20:22, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
yes, it cant be changed and will be stay forever. modern_primat ඞඞඞ ----TALK 20:24, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment @Modern primat: it is a colloquialism in English, and it is fairly benign. Sometimes something to be worn with a little pride. Nothing that should be seen as an insult, just reflecting the approach. <shrug>  — billinghurst sDrewth
