Here is another interesting read aiming to assist #businesses #investors and other stakeholders in assessing #biodiversity impact.

OK here we have it! Lots of different viewpoints reflected. After much discussion and some test buys, I'm starting to recommended a unit size of 10m2 for 1yr (even if the lifetime of the project is longer) whether the projects is Conservation (stewardship), Restoration (uplift), or a Hybrid project. This is a good atomic unit to encourage fungibility in markets. A good base level price point for conservation/stewardship is about 15 cents (US). Restoration or uplift would be significantly more expensive -- a good ballpark is about 3x more with added upfront costs or 45 cents (amortized over 10 yrs) for tropical forests (much more for wetlands, etc). Hybrid approaches might be somewhere in the middle like 30 cents (e.g. assisted forest regeneration by clearing invasives). About 20% of the cost is MRV (higher MRV costs are anticipated to document uplift). There should be 50% benefit share with local communities. Thoughts my own.

This prove that, beyond reaching 30x30 target, better policies that build capacity and engage local communities in protected area management can be cost-effective and sustainable while responding to the obvious staffing gap in PA management in Madagascar. In our partnerships, we strongly believe that local communities's reliability should not be limited to patrolling only. Farmers are involved in the market design, communities in the researches and the governance, etc. There are endless opportunities in finding long term solutions if we're willing to make the necessary change in the way we tackle wildlife conservation. #30by30target #CircularEconomy #ProtectedAreaInvestment #NaturalCapital

OECD - OCDE Ministerial level forum on gender policies navigating the net-zero and energy transitions in Paris: Promoting gender equality is crucial in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. We are happy to join leading voices as we discuss innovative #ClimateFinance mechanisms and reforms necessary to mobilize resources effectively for #ClimateMitigation and adaptation. Our Regional Director Dr. Malle Fofana will be part of the virtual roundtable on "Innovative Climate Finance: Reforming Global Financial Architecture for a Sustainable Future" on June 27. Moderated by Globesight, the event will focus on bridging the existing financing gaps and enhancing the efficiency and impact of climate funds in the global financial architecture. As the UNFCCC drives efforts to establish a new climate finance goal beyond 2025, called the "New Collective Quantified Goal" (NCQG), at COP29 in Baku later this year, it is becoming increasingly clearer that the traditional funding models, such as debt, equity, and grants, have not been sufficient to close the climate finance gap. Innovative climate finance must, therefore, be further emphasized to unlock much-needed private sector capital to meet the growing demands and, at the same time, minimize risks. This virtual dialogue will convene key representatives from international organizations, financial institutions, and philanthropic organizations to discuss innovative climate financing mechanisms and reforms necessary to mobilize resources effectively for climate mitigation and adaptation, particularly in the most vulnerable regions. The designation of the Fogo Island Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2020 represented a great commitment from Cabo Verde’s government towards biodiversity and cultural preservation, recognizing the link between healthy ecosystems, resilient communities and economic stability. In the face of escalating global crises, including biodiversity loss and climate change, Small Island Developing States like Cabo Verde find themselves on the frontline, constantly navigating through a cycle of environmental disasters and recovery efforts, which tests their resilience and ability to sustain their communities and economies, including those related to tourism. Talks at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Bonn, Germany, are coming to an end today and parties have little to show for their two weeks of negotiations on climate finance for developing countries. Details of the updated target must be finalised during the UN Cop 29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan later this year. But so far negotiators have remained entrenched in their positions on key issues such as how much finance should be provided, who should contribute, who should benefit or qualify as "particularly vulnerable" and the quality of the finance — loans over grants — along with the role of private finance. The freedom of #journalists is a vital element for accountability and good governance. On #WorldPressFreedomDay, I want to pay tribute to all the journalists who take personal risks to report and investigate - especially where corruption, conflict, human rights and the environment are at stake. Quality information and reportage is essential for #thinktanks and researchers in the field of policy and international affairs, like myself and many of you on Linked-In. This informs our work in trying to improve the basis for multilateral, government, corporate and civil society decision-making on issues including #peace #economics #energysecurity and #climatechange. In 2018, Chatham House awarded its annual Prize to the Committee to Protect Journalists (do check out their work https://cpj.org/thetorch/). Tragically, since then, conditions for journalists have only worsened. Constraints, and in far too many cases, imprisonment and targetted killings across the World are on the rise. In its latest index, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) finds press freedom increasingly threatened by political authorities, as well as the use of #artificialintelligence in spreading disinformation for political purposes (https://lnkd.in/eF8djr-A). A new UNESCO report found that at least 44 journalists investigating environmental issues had been killed over the last 15 years, of which only 5 have resulted in convictions (see below). And in #Gaza and the #WestBank, the killing of journalists has become normalized, with at least 107 dead since October (watch this video by IMS (International Media Support) https://lnkd.in/eR4kjeXi ). The list of countries repressing press freedom is long and includes many so-called democratic, as well as authoritarian states, and it is something that should be of deep concern to all those in #academia #research and #policy. https://lnkd.in/eagav92J

Countries' climate action has long been characterised as a "prisoners' dilemma" or "collective action problem". That paradigm assumes national governments are all seeking to minimize their own contribution to cutting emissions. The reality is different and we are now seeing that borne out. It's now coming up for 4 years old, but this is one of the most important papers about climate policy and politics of the last decade. The authors argue that people confuse climate *policy* and climate *outcomes*. They write: "climate outcomes are undoubtedly characterized by negative externalities.
