🌊 A Closer Look at Last Weekend’s Intense Flooding in the Swiss Alps 🏔️ Last weekend, the Rhone basin in Switzerland was hit by a flooding episode. The convergence of high-intensity precipitation and the melting of snow at high altitudes are the main causes of this extreme phenomenon. ❄️Exceptional Snow Quantity  in the Alps This season, the Alps have received an exceptional amount of snow. The snow height at 2500 meters is twice as much as the multi-annual average. This volume of snow represents a large amount of water that will flow into the rivers when it melts. 🌧️ The Rain-on-Snow Phenomenon The extreme precipitation event reached its peak on Friday 21st and was coupled with a high rain-snow limit (i.e. the minimum altitude at which precipitation occurs in the form of snow) reaching 3750 m a.s.l. (image 1, panel 1). The Wegaw Snow Cover Extent map of the Zermatt region (image 2), which was particularly affected during this event, shows that much of the area received rain on top of the snow cover. This so-called “rain-on-snow” phenomenon was responsible for a significant melting of the snow cover, reaching about 50 % of the inflow arriving downstream (image 1, panel 3). 💡Understanding Snow Storage Capacity Events like this underscore the importance of knowing exactly where snow is present and how much water is stored in the snowpack. Wegaw provides its clients with spatial estimates of the amount of water stored in the form of snow, known as “Snow Water Equivalent.” This knowledge is not only useful for predicting floods but also for optimising hydroelectric power production! #AlpineFlooding #Hydrology #ClimateChange

We achieved the same level of accuracy for a 7-day horizon that their existing model achieved within three days of a significant melt event. What does this mean for our client? With Wegaw's solution, they can confidently trade several days ahead of their competitors, potentially increasing their margins and significantly reducing water spills and the demand for fossil fuels.
