Road traffic injuries are a silent epidemic in Africa, claiming countless lives and hindering development. According to the latest status report on #roadsafety in the World Health Organization African Region 2023, the numbers are alarming: Africa has the world's highest fatality rate, despite having a fraction of the global vehicle fleet. However, there is hope as 17 African countries have successfully reduced road deaths, proving that progress is possible. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), with support from the UNRSF – UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) under the Reclaiming Streets for Pedestrians and Cyclists in Africa project, has developed a new policy paper to address this urgent crisis. This paper highlights the importance of mainstreaming road safety into national development and transport planning processes across Africa. The toll of road traffic injuries in Africa is not only human but also economic, costing an estimated $162 billion in 2016 alone. It is vital for national governments to prioritize road safety in their development plans by implementing robust policy frameworks, increasing investment in road safety projects, and fostering collaboration among all stakeholders. International organizations and funders also have a vital role to play. By recognizing the urgency of the situation, promoting safe mobility as a fundamental human right, prioritizing road safety in development programs, and integrating road safety metrics into national progress evaluations, we can collectively work towards creating safer roads and saving lives across Africa. Honouring World Motorcycle Day, we're proud to announce the renewal of our collaboration with the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) to enhance motorcycle safety globally. With the number of motorcycles on the road tripling since 2011, focusing on safety is more important than ever. Together with the UNRSF – UN Road Safety Fund, we are committed to sharing knowledge and insights to empower the international road safety community to drive necessary changes to create safer roads for all. This partnership supports the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.6 to reduce road traffic fatalities and injuries by 2030 and aligns with Autoliv's goal of saving 100,000 lives annually.

📢 Today, on #WorldMotorcycleDay, Autoliv, the global leader in automotive safety systems, and the UNRSF – UN Road Safety Fund are proud to announce the renewal of their collaboration to enhance motorcycle safety on a global scale. This renewed commitment builds on the success of their initial partnership, established in 2022, and reflects a shared vision of saving lives. The Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023 highlights a concerning statistic: motorcycles and scooters account for a staggering 21% of global road traffic deaths despite only making up a fraction of vehicles on the road. Through combined efforts, Autoliv and UNRSF aim to empower the global road safety community – including UN agencies, NGOs, and technology providers – by sharing valuable insights, knowledge, and data. This collaborative approach directly aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.6, targeting a 50% reduction in road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030, and Autoliv's ambitious goal of saving 100,000 lives annually. This renewed commitment is an important step towards the upcoming Road to Morocco High-Level Pledging Forum in February 2025.

Road Safety in Small Islands: A Call for Stronger Emergency Care Systems At the recent #SIDS4 conference, the UNRSF – UN Road Safety Fund and Pan American Health Organization co-hosted a side event highlighting the critical road safety challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Young people are disproportionately impacted by road crashes in these regions, placing a significant burden on healthcare systems. The event emphasized the importance of strengthening emergency care systems to save lives. Training healthcare personnel, improving clinical processes, and establishing strong regulations were identified as key areas for improvement. Collaboration across sectors is crucial. The UNRSF and PAHO are committed to working with governments, NGOs, and all stakeholders to address this global challenge and ensure a safer future for all, especially young people. ❗ #Motorcycles make up over half of all #vehicles in #Rwanda but carry 3 times the crash risk. Head injuries are a leading cause of death and serious disability in these crashes, contributing to 650 reported road deaths in Rwanda every year. "More than half of these deaths involve vulnerable motorcycles, many of whom can be saved by wearing a proper #helmet," noted Jean Todt, United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for #RoadSafety, during his visit to Rwanda this week. Mr. Todt has joined the Government of Rwanda's Helmets Initiative to provide helmets that meet UN safety standards to every rider. United Nations Economic Commission for Europe is the custodian of UN road safety legal instruments applicable worldwide. These instruments serve as a foundation for states to build national legal frameworks which prevent death and injuries from road traffic crashes. "Rwanda has a tremendous opportunity to become a leader in road safety in #Africa," Mr. Todt said at the handover of new helmets to City of Kigali officials on 27 May 2024. "By working together, we can ensure that every motorcycle rider has access to a safe, affordable helmet and that every family can travel the roads of Rwanda with peace of mind." UNRSF – UN Road Safety Fund is active in Rwanda and plays a key role in ensuring that helmets used are of good quality. It does so by building a foundation for a scalable helmet manufacturing industry that will produce a consistent supply of safe, affordable helmets to be exported across the continent. 🔎 https://lnkd.in/dfncZnGM 📸 UN Country Team in Rwanda Ozonnia Ojielo Dr Brian Chirombo Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure(MININFRA) United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Mama Keita Nneka Henry Valeria Motta Véronique Rondeau Stéphanie Schumacher Marzia Guadalupi Aleksandra Kokoreva Giovanni Pintor
