Alzheimer’s disease disproportionately affects women, presenting unique challenges and highlighting the need for gender-specific research and interventions. 🧠 Two-thirds of Alzheimer’s patients are women, translating to approximately 66% of cases. This statistic underscores the importance of tailored approaches to diagnosis, care, and support for women. 🚺 Rapid Progression: Women with Alzheimer’s often experience faster cognitive decline compared to men, making early detection and intervention crucial. 🔢 Lifetime Risk: A woman aged 45 has a 20% chance of developing Alzheimer’s in her lifetime, double the risk compared to men of the same age. 🧬 Genetic Risk: Women carrying the APOE-e4 allele, a genetic risk factor, have twice the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to non-carriers. Additionally, women are more likely to take on caregiving roles, further emphasizing the multifaceted impact of Alzheimer’s on their lives. More than 60% of caregivers for Alzheimer’s patients are women, which also affects their own mental and physical health. Congratulations to Tech4Eva Alumni Malaica for successfully closing a $1M pre-seed funding round led by Markus Gemuend, former Managing Director of Roche Africa with participation from Silicon Valley-based Kapor Capital known for their substantial experience in the maternal health space. Malaica, founded by Lorraine Muluka and Pascal Koenig in 2021, is designing a remote pregnancy support program to make pregnancy safe and convenient for African Pregnant women. The program offers a dedicated nurse midwife as a coach, a community of Pregnant women, personalized education, and support accessing all appropriate healthcare. Plus, many health interventions are delivered 100% remotely.
