We work with a multifaceted approach to optimize the use of scrap in steel production. 💡 Closing loops with customers: In an innovative move to close the material loop, we have established programs to retrieve scrap from our customers. 💡 Partnerships with recycling companies: Recognizing the importance of external scrap sources, we have formed numerous partnerships and some strategic alliances with scrap collection and recycling companies. 💡 Diverse scrap utilization: We can use a wide variety of metal scraps in our manufacturing process. We focus on identifying and utilizing scrap types that maximize the recycled content in our products, thereby reducing our overall carbon emissions. 💡 Maximizing internal scrap usage: We prioritize the utilization of internal scrap resources in our production processes, thereby enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of our operations. Another key area of our expertise is the meticulous sorting of scrap, enabling us to optimize alloy utilization. Let's bring us together! All employees were invited to our group-wide ‘Big Breakfast’. The ‘Big Breakfast’ was organised individually at each location and offered the opportunity to exchange information, get to know the group better and also spend time together. In France, breakfasts and goûters with pastries and savoury tarts spoiled the participants, while in Germany an ice cream van refreshed our colleagues. A quiz about SSG and a raffle also contributed to a variety of conversations between employees from all departments. In one of our last posts, we talked about our valuable source material - scrap steel. To transform the input material into high-quality output requires large amounts of energy. Our main energy sources are electrical energy and natural gas. Electrical energy is mainly consumed by our electric arc furnaces, whereas natural gas is primarily used for the generation of process heat in our rolling mill and our forging and heat treatment furnaces. Wherever possible, we use the heat contained in waste gas in heat exchangers such as regenerators. We also use waste heat to reduce our own natural gas consumption and CO2 emissions for heating. The rolling mill in Emmenbrücke, Switzerland, and the heat treatment shop in Ugine, France, also feed part of their waste heat into district heating networks. We are excited to announce our collaboration with SKF Group to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the production of rolling bearings across Europe. Starting in January 2024, SKF has been exclusively sourcing our GreenSteel Climate+, made from scrap steel and produced in electric arc furnaces using renewable energy. This partnership is a major step towards our shared goal of achieving net-zero emissions. Switching to GreenSteel Climate+ has reduced the CO2 emissions of the products supplied to SKF by an average of 40%.
