#CircularEconomy is a central element in our strategy for a carbon-neutral and sustainable metals industry. The recycling of metals enables us to preserve natural resources by reducing the consumption of resources and minimize the generation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. Metals and their alloys are valuable materials, which can be fully recycled without degrading their properties. This means, metals are particularly suited to a circular economy as they are extremely durable and can theoretically be recycled an infinite number of times without making any compromises to their quality. Metals and other valuable substances can be recovered from metal scrap, electronic waste and batteries. 🌍🔋🔄   At the E-Waste World Conference & Expo in Frankfurt, Germany, we once again experienced the growing interest in our recycling solutions. This key event in battery, e-scrap, and metal recycling was a perfect platform for us to dive into fruitful exchanges about our competences in e-waste recycling and our partnership with Primobius. Our booth was a networking hotspot, offering us the possibility to engage with numerous companies and academic institutions. 📢 We will be back at EBM Recycling Expo next year. Today, Guido Michelon, who is part of the global SMS family, would like to share their personal coming out story with you.   "When I started my career almost 25 years ago and later joined SMS, I never imagined that I would have the freedom to be completely myself in a professional environment, let alone in Italy. At work, my personal life was filtered out, sometimes unspoken, and I was convinced that this would always be the case and that I would just have to accept and live with it. I had good relationships with the team, but of course something very important was missing. Eventually, I decided that I could no longer live that way. When I decided to come out to my colleagues, not only did it not cause any problems for my career or my relationships at work, but I actually found encouragement and respect from those around me. I felt a sense of personal freedom and a fundamental increase in my overall well-being.   I realized that I had a company with leaders and colleagues who would always support me in very important moments, such as when I needed some flexibility when my husband and I welcomed our twin daughters. That makes me not only grateful, but proud to be part of such a team. Looking back, it has been an incredible and eventful journey for me, but more importantly, a fundamental shift in mindset. For too long, as a boy and young man, I felt different and wanted to be "like everyone else". As we continue to prepare for the erection of one of Europe’s largest-ever decarbonization projects, a first-of-its-kind direct reduction hydrogen plant for thyssenkrupp Steel in Duisburg, we were pleased to welcome members of the senior leadership of DF-Duro Felguera, who we have contracted as a partner in the erection of the Open Bath Furnaces.   As the EPC contractor, SMS is responsible for the overall engineering, material procurement and construction of this mega-project, which will be a major contributor to the #greentransformation of the European steel industry, saving up to 3.5 million tonnes of CO² annually and significantly contributing to Germany’s climate goals.   #sustainability #greensteel #turningmetalsgreen

Developing young talents and driving innovation 🚀   In 2023, we launched our first global trainee program, starting with the Long Products department and planning to expand further. This initiative highlights our dedication to nurturing young talent and driving innovation in the metals industry. 🌟   In August 2023, 13 trainees from Italy, India, China, and Germany embarked on a journey with SMS, focusing on innovative thinking and problem-solving.   A highlight of the program was the innovation training, which kicked off in September 2023 and focused on three key innovation challenges:   • Reducing noise levels in our plants 🔊 • Recovering energy (heat) during the hot rolling process 🔥 • Reducing water consumption in our plants 💧   Each challenge was tackled by a trainee team, encouraging creative and comprehensive solutions.
