Heat and Storms Forecast for Tuesday's Games in Paris! As we gear up for another exciting week of events, the weather is bringing its own challenges. Today, sunny and hot conditions are expected across France. Paris will experience a scorching 33°C, with cooler temperatures in the north, while the south could see highs up to 37°C. (Refer to the accompanying map for temperature highs at all French venues.) With weak easterly winds and high humidity (dew point >20°C), heat stress will be significant for spectators and, most importantly, athletes. This hot weather is typical for this time of year, often referred to as the #dogdays or "#canicule." Expect the humid heat to trigger localized thunderstorms in the evening, particularly in the Paris area (Île-de-France). These could bring heavy rain, temporary gusts, and even hail. Looking ahead, more thunderstorms are forecasted for Wednesday and Friday in the northern half of France, while hot weather will persist in the south. The local point forecast for Paris indicates temperatures between 16°C and 26°C for the first week of August. Conditions are expected to improve with lower humidity and no severe weather, providing better weather for all participants. Stay hydrated, stay safe, and keep an eye on the sky! The event officially starts with the traditional opening ceremony, which takes place on the Seine River in #Paris instead of in a stadium. Due to a low-pressure system located near Iceland and an air mass boundary in northern France, humid air is being transported from the Atlantic northeastward, resulting in rain showers from the afternoon into the night, totaling around 10-20 mm/6h. Today’s highest temperature in Paris is around 25°C, and at the start of the ceremony, about 19-20°C can be expected. Therefore, spectators and athletes are advised to bring some rain cover. Many disciplines take place indoors; others, like canoeing and cycling, are much more weather-dependent. Some rain showers are still possible on Saturday, with temperatures only rising to 21°C. Towards the beginning of next week, France will increasingly come under high-pressure influence, allowing conditions to remain predominantly dry and temperatures in Paris to increase. On Sunday, temperatures could reach up to 26°C, on Monday 29°C, and by Tuesday up to 32°C. The increasing temperatures and the unstable air could also lead to the formation of thunderstorms and rain showers on Tuesday evening. More rain showers are possible in the following days, but temperatures will remain high, above 25°C. Not all sporting events are in Paris; the sailing disciplines occur in the south of France in Marseille. Here, the Mediterranean climate results in dry and hot conditions, with temperatures above 30°C in the coming days. The critical parameter here, however, is wind speed. In the next few days, wind gusts of 15 to 30 km/h are expected, possibly increasing towards the end of next week with potential Mistral formation. The venue for surfing is even further away in the French collectivity of French Polynesia. The island is in its winter half-year with cooler temperatures and dry conditions. Currently, temperatures still rise to 24-27°C during the day. Over the past two weeks, a surge of warm air in the stratosphere has disrupted the #AntarcticPolarVortex. Although there wasn't a complete breakdown, the vortex now exhibits a wavier pattern. Model forecasts for early August predict another wave of warm air at 10hPa, potentially displacing the vortex further. Southern sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are rare, with only a few occurrences in recent decades. These events are characterized by a significant increase in air temperature 30-40km above the polar regions, often by tens of degrees Celsius over a few days. While SSWs primarily alter stratospheric circulation, their effects can extend to the troposphere, potentially disrupting the tropospheric polar vortex weeks later. The effects can lead to significant polar air outbreaks reaching midlatitude regions. If a southern SSW develops in August, it could significantly impact late winter in Australia. Robust low-pressure systems may bring more cold fronts to South Australia, increasing rainfall and snowfall in the southeastern and southwestern regions of the continent. The second animation highlights the powerful southern SSW event of late August 2019, one of the strongest in recent decades. These events are not only potent and long-lasting but also have global impacts. The Brewer-Dobson circulation, which connects the southern and northern stratosphere, is another reason the 2019/2020 Northern Hemisphere stratospheric polar vortex was powerful and cold. This circulation led to record-breaking Arctic ozone depletion and contributed to hot weather in Europe. Want to see our #WeatherData in action with #MetX? ☀ Extreme water temperatures in the Mediterranean ⚠ While summer has not yet really arrived in Switzerland, Mediterranean regions are currently experiencing extreme heat once again. In the past two weeks, the Mediterranean has warmed significantly, reaching temperatures similar to those of the Caribbean in many areas. The Adriatic Sea, in particular, has reached 30°C in recent days, which is 5 to 6 degrees above average. From the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea to the coast of Libya, water temperatures are currently between 28°C and 30°C. In some places between Cyprus and the southern coast of Turkey, temperatures are even reaching 31°C to 32°C. In contrast, the Balearic and Aegean Seas remain somewhat cooler. The Mistral and Etesian winds typically facilitate better mixing and upwelling of colder deep water in these areas. The continuing inflow of significantly cooler Atlantic water through the Strait of Gibraltar is also clearly recognisable. With the persistent heat, Mediterranean water temperatures are expected to continue rising in the coming days and weeks, with the highest temperatures typically occurring in August. These elevated temperatures threaten the underwater ecosystem, potentially leading to jellyfish population booms that pose risks to fishermen and tourists. Additionally, the region may experience increasing risk for weather extremes in late summer and autumn. Reliable #WeatherData is absolutely essential so that businesses and industries can better prepare for such extreme weather events. Meteomatics provides all the necessary data via the #WeatherAPI - everything you need to prepare your organization. Talk to our experts now to find out more: https://lnkd.in/d69q8z8H

On Monday, #HurricaneBeryl landed near Matagorda, Texas, marking the first hurricane of the 2024 #AtlanticHurricaneSeason. This explosive strengthening was partly fueled by exceptionally warm ocean temperatures, a factor behind NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s May prediction of an 85% chance that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season would be above normal. Learn more about the forecast here: https://lnkd.in/equAERZ9 Key Impacts from Beryl: 🌧️ Heavy Rainfall: Beryl brought daily accumulated rainfall of 2-4 inches, causing significant flooding. Houston recorded over 4 inches of rain on Monday. 💨 Wind Gusts & Power Outages: Southeast Texas is now on its fifth day of power outages due to Beryl's impacts, which included gusts up to 50 mph at landfall. 🔥 Extreme Heat: Power outages and temperatures nearing 100 °F have created dangerous conditions. The heat index, with values exceeding 86°F, poses a high risk for heat exhaustion. Tragically, the storm has caused at least 11 fatalities across Texas and Louisiana. Our hearts go out to the families affected by these events. We support industries looking to stay ahead of dangerous storms like Beryl all year with precise, real-time data.
