Truly inspiring words from James about our recent leadership meeting in Tokyo. It’s clear that our team, like the Taiko drummers, beats as one. Excited to keep the rhythm of success and collaboration going strong! #Teamwork #Leadership #JTI

Taiko drummers. For this post, silent Taiko drummers (keeping the sound seemed like sensory overload when I’m trying to reflect). Just by watching these musicians, you can feel the rhythm and you know they’re in sync. It’s an image that’s stayed with me from our recent leadership meeting in Tokyo. Not just because they were mesmerizing. But because I was struck by how well they must all know and trust each other to be able to pull off such a seamless, intuitive performance. My last post was about becoming comfortable being uncomfortable, which seems to have resonated (honestly, I was overwhelmed by your kind and encouraging comments). It was glimpse of who I am, but after a few days with the JTI leadership team, it seems right to share a little about who we are and how we work together. We’re a big group – over 250 from around the world – but we’re cohesive. And over the last few years we’ve become more and more in tune. I like how relatively humble we are. Respectful, but with a real desire to welcome challenge. Even though the agenda in Tokyo was serious, we had fun (!) and there was an openness that I hadn`t felt before. You get much more out of a conference when everyone is at ease with each other and given endless opportunities to get involved. Presentations were short, leaving us plenty of space to discuss strategic topics – everything from investment posture to whether we understand the consumer in the best way. The result? Credibility across the team. A belief that not only are we heading in the right direction but that everyone knows how they will contribute to our success. I don`t believe I`m alone when I say that we all left Tokyo feeling tremendously positive, with a real sense of energy and excitement for what’s to come. Just like for the Taiko drummers, the conference was our stage, the showcase for years of hard work, collaboration, and to my mind, a brilliant team spirit.

Did you know that organized crime groups (OCGs) are endemic in the illegal trade of tobacco? While governments are estimated to lose $40-50 billion tax revenue per year, the profits made by the OCGs operating in the dark underworld of illegal tobacco trade are much higher. These profits often finance other forms of serious criminal activities including drug dealing, firearms trafficking, migrant smuggling and even terrorism, thus building their illegal empires unhindered.   This is just one of the findings of the newly released “Fighting the Dark Underworld” report on the causes and drivers of the illegal tobacco trade, conducted by Intrinsic Insight Ltd in cooperation with JTI. Last week, we attended the 26th edition of the European Publishing Congress in Vienna. Our team had the opportunity to meet media experts, including editors-in-chief, reporters and digital experts, to discuss and raise awareness of the threats and undesired consequences of the illicit tobacco trade. We also brought the participants’ attention to the “Fighting the Dark Underworld” report, which has insights from primary qualitative research and quantitative interviews.
