Pipeline Opportunities for Inter-Collegiate Stem Education (POISE)
The POISE Program, administered by the College of Arts and Science and CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), is meant to create a pipeline for promising sophomore-standing students pursuing STEM-related majors (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) at BMCC. Up to five (5) students are selected to receive a scholarship covering full tuition at NYU so they may pursue a Bachelors degree in a STEM-related program of study.
Students selected to participate in the POISE Program can expect to receive the following benefits:
- Automatic membership to the prestigious Academic Achievement Program (AAP)
- Specialized advising with a professional advisor from the College of Arts and Science (CAS)
- Networking opportunites with POISE Scholars who've successfully matriculated to NYU
- NYU emails and ID cards allowing for access to campus
- Career development workshops through the Wasserman Center for Career Development
- University Learning Center and Writing Center for specialized tutoring and writing workshops
- Workshops and services from the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP)
- Tansfer application informational session presented by the Office of Admissions
- Access to the variety of on- and off-campus NYU libraries
The POISE Program is a full year program. The process begins in the Summer semester at BMCC with eligible sophomore-standing students being contacted by Michael Hutmaker, Dean for Student Affairs, for a preliminary interview. Students will then be contacted by AAP administation to schedule a second, final interview the beginning of the Fall semester. Those who move on will become this year's POISE Scholars, spending the next few months taking advantage of the various opportunities and resources offered at NYU. This period of time is the most crucial aspect of the POISE Program as scholarship recipients are determined by their academics as well as how engaged they are with the NYU community.
At the end of the Spring semester, up to five POISE Scholars are selected as the finalists and recipients of the POISE scholarship and will begin as matriculated NYU students that coming Fall semester. Scholarship recipients will receive funding for the remaining two years (Fall & Spring semesters only) to complete their Bachelor's degree.
