Kudos to Strathcona Resources Ltd. executive chairman Adam Waterous for using language like “moral obligation to reduce...emissions" and taking the long view of the value of doing so: “Our production is going to last 30 or 40 years, and we’re going to go through multiple governments in those 30 or 40 years. But the sequestration of carbon is an important goal, an important good for the community”. And good to see Canada Growth Fund forging new models to fund #climate initiatives.

CANADA'S OIL AND GAS SECTOR HAS AN IMPRESSIVE TECHNOLOGY-TRANSFER TRACK RECORD... Indeed, it's a record laid down decade by decade and dating back nearly a century. And by many measures, it is the foundation on which the country's energy transition record is being built. In fact, tech transfer is more than notionally the basis on which "energy transition" assumes a broader historical utility -- that is, we've been in a transition mindset for a long time now. That means we've long been deploying tech prudently for better environmental and economic performance and learning from the often-hard lessons tech teaches. It's too bad the sector's storytelling competencies and its overall appreciation of its own historical record aren't up to equal snuff. Of course, definitions of energy transition vary wildly, with many outside-the-sector critics insisting that it is an either abrupt or accelerated move away from fossil fuels. That's why many inside the sector opt for modifiers like "transformation" and "evolution" which to their minds implies a different type of change in which petroleum maintains central status but there is a very real ethos of doing things differently. For the better. Words matter. Meaning matters. But what matters more is trusted provenance. So, let's look back to 1934 in Turner Valley southwest of Calgary as a case in point -- to a point in the record when a technology decision powered a transition moment. That's when the "oil column" theory was in vogue. And its main proponent was a Quebec electrician-turned-oilman named Robert Arthur Brown. Brown believed the Turner Valley field, down deep, lay atop a massive column of oil. Before then the field's primary production since 1914 had been wet natural gas. He didn't have a whole pile of believers in his corner; even the geologists were skeptical. But persist he did, banging away at the subsurface with the help of a cable tool rig at Royalties No. 1. But lifting and dropping a heavy hunk of sharpened metal is tortuous and time-consuming. The cable bit made it to 3,180 feet with no oil in sight but a whole lot of learnings in hand. So, Brown made the tech transfer, by converting the rig to rotary drilling and convincing skeptical investors to back his vision. Finally, on June 16, 1936 at 6,828 feet, the bit hit green oil and Royalties No. 1 became Canada's deepest well to date. All because a determined man understood when and how to shift technology gears and made a critical transition decision. The company’s relationship with its incumbent credit union was fraught with challenges, complicating negotiations for more financing.   Solution An accountant introduced 123 Sask Ltd. to Kyle Kreppenhofer at Ashdown. Though equity did exist in the real estate, the rural locations were out of market for most lenders. Kyle eventually secured term sheets for both the working capital and real estate financing. Though both were subsequently pulled (for different reasons), Kyle found an agricultural lender willing to finance some unrelated farmland the customer owned.   Given the delays related to the pulled term sheets, CRA became unconvinced a payout would happen. And so they were becoming increasingly assertive. Kyle engaged directly with CRA, and his transparency gave them the confidence to sit tight while we finalized the transaction. Energy Connections Canada Applauds the Completion of Coastal GasLink The Project Represents a Profound Canadian Contribution to Global Decarbonization   Calgary, June 6, 2024 – Energy Connections Canada (ECC), the association of Canada’s pipeline owners and supporting industries, congratulates TC Energy on its completion of the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
