Good evening everyone, Quick update: The Ontario Building Code 2024 will be enforced starting January 1, 2025. Please take note of the structural notes from the recent seminar, as they will influence the forthcoming revisions to the Code. Check out the attached slide for details on the structural revisions. ———————————— 8. Structural Design To fully harmonize with National's recent structural design changes in the following areas: Earthquake Design: Buildings would be designed to meet the new applicable seismic loads for the geographic locations and site conditions. Furthermore, the web-based seismic data tool, that is now available and specific to each proposed buildings site, would be referenced in the Building Code. Importance Categories: Revises the descriptions of the types of buildings in the Importance Categories which are the parameters that dictate the required design strength. Solar panels: Introduces provisions to calculate wind and snow loads for roofs with roof-mounted solar panels, if the building is intended to have solar panel. Canopies & Parapets: Introduces provisions to calculate wind loads for attached canopies, roof parapets and balcony guards near the tops of buildings. Serviceability: Relocates the information on load combinations for serviceability to the main body of the Code from National's "Structural Commentaries - User's Guide". 9. Structural Design (storage racks) • Harmonize and Adopt National's new requirements for Structural design of storage racks in Part 4.

Something as inane as… “which topics should we cover in each module?” is a big deal here at Haland Learning. While we prepare our version 4.1 course for formal launch across Canada (excluding Newfoundland), this is a sneak peak at the draft table of contents. The one on the left has Ladders in Module 1, but it would leave Module 2 to be too short… so we moved Ladders to Module 2. 1. We want to distribute topics in a logical manner throughout the course, and 2. We aim to have 5 or less modules per course, and 3. We REALLY try to have the table of contents be on one single page. If it takes up more space, it’s because we haven’t spent enough time organizing and clarifying the course material. We put in the hundreds of hours of work to create clean, concise and workable training materials so our instructors can enjoy teaching and students can enjoy learning. Dislcaimer. This is NOT done. But I wanted to show an example of what we do behind the scenes.

A recent construction dispute related to the Gatineau flood in 2017 was resolved in court, underscoring the necessity of precise agreements, meticulous documentation, and expert testimony in navigating construction contract disputes. The core issue revolved around Danis's post-flooding contract to elevate and replace Alberelli's house foundation, claiming an unpaid balance of $72,335.49, countered by Alberelli's $224,807 counterclaim citing defects and deficiencies. The court ordered plaintiff Roberto Alberelli to pay defendant Levage Danis $30,564.42 for unfinished and disputed work on Alberelli's house, delving into allegations of unfulfilled promises and work deficiencies. The court scrutinized the contractual agreement, noting a discrepancy between promised and delivered foundations. The judgment stressed the importance of clear agreements and documentation in construction contracts. Analysis included evaluation of claimed defects' legitimacy, notice adequacy, added property value, timely legal hypothec registration, and expert fee reimbursement entitlement.
