About us
With 69 local United Way Centraide offices serving more than 5,000 communities across Canada, the United Way Centraide Movement is helping to improve lives from coast to coast to coast. Locally and nationally, our goal is the same – to create opportunities for a better life for everyone in our communities. Our unique approach focuses on meeting immediate needs while also addressing the underlying conditions that make people vulnerable in the first place. When you give to United Way Centraide, you are investing locally in three areas that are crucial for our country to thrive: 1) Moving people from poverty to possibility 2) Helping kids be all they can be 3) Building strong and healthy communities United Way Centraide Canada, the national office, was founded in 1939. It plays a critical role in providing national leadership and membership support for the network of local United Ways and Centraides across Canada. As a Canadian Movement with a strong heritage, we value trust and integrity, volunteerism, innovation, partnership, non-partisan leadership, and diversity. It is on the basis of these values that we improve lives and build communities. Visit our website at www.unitedway.ca or www.centraide.ca. In the first six months of 2023, the 211 helpline received over 43,000 housing related requests. That's a 22% increase from the previous 6-month period. Housing is a human right, not a commodity. Everyone deserves a home, regardless of their financial status, race, gender, cultural background, disability, mental health, or substance use issues. . . .

Curious about how we're tackling burnout and low pay in the nonprofit sector? Anita Khanna, National Director, Public Policy and Government Relations at United Way Centraide Canada, shares insights on developing a Labour Force Strategy to address these systemic issues.
In the nonprofit sector, we've long heard about burn-out, low pay and minimal benefits among front-line staff. Anita Khanna is helping to lead a team to develop a solution in the next three years: a Labour Force Strategy for paid workers in the care economy within the community services sector in Canada. "We want the project to address labour force issues primarily at the systemic level. We need more workers in the sector, and we need current workers to be compensated fairly. To achieve that, something new must happen." We spoke to her about the upcoming Strategy's plan and scope. https://lnkd.in/g495h28b

We are so grateful to receive a generous donation of tampons from the staff of United Way Centraide Canada as part of #TamponTuesday! Many women who have been criminalized struggle to afford the necessities, and tampons are often priced out of reach. This donation helps us support the basic needs of our residential and community clients. Thank you for helping us provide dignity and care to some of the most vulnerable in the Ottawa community. #MenstrualHealthMatters #EndPeriodPoverty #CommunitySupport #EFryOttawa #UnitedWayCentraide
