The longest clear-span timber gridshell in the world of its kind The largest of the Taiyuan Botanical Garden Domes is a non-triangulated gridshell, resulting in a choice to use a light diagrid layer of nearly invisible, but carefully detailed cables and adjustable nodes to mitigate multi-modal snap-through buckling by stabilizing/organizing the buckling modes. The problem was neatly solved by devising for each node a special casting with separate pieces joined with an adjusting bolt which could essentially “pull” tension into the cable net, by pulling the cables closer to the gridshell above, thereby lengthening the entire cable net. This project used an early iteration of StructureCraft Branch 3D to allow the thousands of complex part and piece drawings to be created rapidly. ♻️ StructureCraft ✍️ StructureCraft, Delugan Meissl Associated Architects 📷 Light Chaser

The largest of the Taiyuan Botanical Garden Domes is a non-triangulated gridshell, resulting in our choice to use a light diagrid layer of nearly invisible, but carefully detailed cables and adjustable nodes to mitigate multi-modal snap-through buckling by stabilizing/organizing the buckling modes. A major challenge lay in how to tension the cables, given that they had to connect numerous nodes in a two way pattern. The problem was neatly solved by devising for each node a special casting with separate pieces joined with an adjusting bolt which could essentially “pull” tension into the cable net, by pulling the cables closer to the gridshell above, thereby lengthening the entire cable net. “Southern yellow pine is prevalent in this area of the country, so the species can and should be utilized to build mass timber structures," says Leif Johnson, Structural Engineering Director at StructureCraft in our case study detailing the 619 Ponce project in #Atlanta. "We are excited about helping expand the potential with different species. Our hope is that by using southern pine on this building, it acts as a catalyst for the entire southeast region.” The project is also the first to participate in the State of Georgia’s #Sustainable Development Carbon Sequestration Registry, a program that allows developers to earn #carboncredits by utilizing materials like #masstimber in their buildings. The Presentation Centre at Fraser Mills pays homage to the legacy of the local old lumber mill, which held a prominent position as the largest mill in the region and played a pivotal role in the growth of Vancouver. Inspired by the site’s rich historical significance, Patkau Architects's visionary design for Beedie's presentation center encapsulates a master plan info hub and two display homes that seamlessly blend the past with the present. It ingeniously incorporates elements symbolizing innovation and growth, where the central themes of craft, wood, and technology converge to reflect both the traditional craftsmanship deeply rooted in the lumber mill’s heritage and the cutting-edge advancements that have shaped the area’s development. “The goal was not merely to construct a building but to create a living testament that seamlessly weaves together the past, present, and future.” says Greg Boothroyd, Principal at Patkau Architects. Our role: Structural engineer of record and timber builder #Coquitlam #StructuralEngineering #MassTimber #TimberConstruction

Imagine a museum with a US Coast Guard helicopter hanging from the ceiling! The Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria, Oregon is set to undergo a transformative $30M expansion, nearly doubling its size with a new Mariners Hall. With 24,500 sqft (2300 sqm) of exhibit space, the Hall will showcase a vast collection of maritime artifacts and historic vessels, nearly doubling its size to enhance its role as an educational, research, and tourist destination on the West Coast. Structurally, Mariner’s Hall showcases a curved timber roof that vaults over the exhibition area, providing a visually striking open space that can be seen from the outside through full-height windows. Curved glulam ribs spanning up to 60 ft (18m) are topped with purlin-plywood panels to create an all-wood roof supported by strategically placed timber and steel columns. The new museum emphasizes an innovative and sustainable approach to structural design, nodding to the history of wood structures on the Museum’s campus, in maritime construction, and throughout the Pacific Northwest. Since its inception, the Nancy Pauw Bridge has been an important connection in #Banff, #Alberta. The bridge was assembled using prefabricated sections to minimize environmental disruptions and designed with a shallow arch to blend seamlessly into the landscape. It serves as both a functional piece of infrastructure and a scenic destination. Connecting Central Park with the Banff Recreation Grounds, the bridge supports up to 8,000 crossings a day! It helps alleviate traffic on another nearby bridge and encourages eco-friendly transportation methods. Honouring the legacy of Nancy Pauw—an avid cyclist and dedicated community member—this bridge stands as a model of sustainable infrastructure that enhances community life. Want to learn more about this Government of Canada project?  https://lnkd.in/eYRbCF4n Have you visited the Nancy Pauw Bridge, or do you plan to? What are your thoughts on this blend of nature and engineering? StructureCraft Town of Banff
