Canada’s largest food rescue organization and global thought leader on perishable food redistribution.
About us
Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization and is a global thought leader on perishable food redistribution. We work with thousands of food businesses from across the supply chain to redirect unsold surplus food to non-profit organizations that feed communities in every province and territory. By keeping perfectly edible food from ending up in landfill and redirecting it to the charitable sector, our work prevents harmful greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere and improves access to nutrition for the millions of people in Canada experiencing food insecurity. In addition to our core work of food rescue, Second Harvest produces research on food loss and waste, provides education and training for the charitable food sector and has developed the Second Harvest Food Rescue App to facilitate direct donations from food businesses to local non-profits across Canada. In 2023 we rescued 74.4 million lbs of healthy perishable food and diverted it to more than 14,000 programs in charities and non-profits across Canada, averting over 241 million pounds of greenhouse gases. Our vision: No Waste. No Hunger Our mission is to keep food where it belongs: On plates and out of landfills.

Rain or shine, food will be rescued! 🌧️ Even a torrential downpour and flash flooding in Toronto didn't stop the Second Harvest team yesterday. We don’t only rescue food to help fight food insecurity, but because it also helps combat climate change. Food that ends up in landfills creates methane gas, which is more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide. If greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase, so too will the effects of climate change, including more intense and frequent storms around the world. Did you know that only 4% of surplus edible food is rescued and redistributed in Canada? Join me on this Food Recovery Series as I travel across Western Canada, sourcing surplus food within the supply chain for redistribution to Second Harvest's vast network of non-profit organizations. I’ll be sharing stories of local food rescue initiatives, the unique aspects of each region’s food system, and reflections on my conversations with those who sustain it. #foodrecovery #secondharvest #foodrescue #westerncanada #blogseries

58% of food produced for Canadians is lost or wasted every year and 32% of that food is edible and could be redirected... that’s 11 million metric tonnes of good food that could go to people in need! How many Calgary Towers make up the same weight? Make your guess in the comments below, watch the video to find out the right answer and come find us in the Nutrien Western Event Centre at the Calgary Stampede to learn more! 🤠💚 #SecondHarvest #CalgaryStampede #FoodWaste #Alberta #NoWasteNoHunger
