ARR Growth Rate 2. Net Revenue Retention Rate (NRR) 3. Gross Revenue Retention Rate (GRR) 4. Burn Multiple 5. Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) Payback Period 6. ARR per Employee 7. Total Gross Margin The data, based on 936 survey responses, shows what many companies experienced first-hand: FY-23 was a tough year 😥. - Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) Growth Rates were overwhelmingly down - Median Net Revenue Retention Rate (NRR) continued its year over year decline - Burn Multiple performance weakened That said, some bright spots emerged 😀. - Gross Revenue Retention Rate (GRR) and Total Gross Margin held their own with stable year-over-year top quartile values - CAC Payback Period decreased year-over-year for 4 of the 6 Annual Contract Value (ACV) bands measured What's next? 1.     Candid insights shared today by Andrew W., CEO of Assent, on their “Rapid Assent” from series A to US $100M ARR over the past 8 years. Delighted to see their trajectory and will always be grateful to Andrew and Keira Torkko for taking a chance and hiring me for my first consulting gig almost 6 yrs ago! ON BEING THE CEO 👨🍳 👩🍳 I’m a generalist. I hire specialists. The CEO has to fight entropy. Entropy kills companies. [Entropy = "Lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder."]   ON THE HARDEST THINGS 🤔 Hiring the right people at the right time, and getting them to work together towards the goals you set out. Need Intellect, Integrity, and Intensity. Avoid chasing the next shiny thing. Focus on 1) Who will you serve, and 2) How will you win. When you get new information, change your mind. When something’s not working, ask “Is it the strategy or the execution?” When it’s the latter, may need to change the exec. Usually regret not having done it sooner. ON SALES LEADERS 💰 You can and should do your due diligence. But you can’t really know how they’ll do until they’re in the seat. You need different kinds of sales leaders at different stages of your company’s evolution. You go from tribal knowledge to systems. In the early days, you need sales leaders who have their own magic. As you grow you need sales leaders who build a system.   ON M&A 🤝 M&A is hard. You have to do it for the right reason, at the right price, and get the integration right. Two dwarves do not make a giant. When you buy early-stage companies, they’re always broken somewhere. You get a hairball. Does the value of what you get – new product capability, accelerated access new region – offset that hairball. ON METRICS 📊 Track your SaaS metrics.
