Last week marked the inaugural summer school for the Simons Foundation Collaboration on Celestial Holography. Attendees in the building explored the latest advancements in celestial holography and discussed the direction of future research. 📝 Going beyond energy: ground-state properties unlocked in a certifiable and scalable way A team of researchers theoretically obtain for the first time, certifiable bounds on many-body ground-state properties beyond the energy with competitive performance. The resulting method is general and scalable. The article, published in the journal Physical Review X, is a team effort led by Dr Jie Wang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in collaboration with ICFO researchers Dr Jacopo Surace - now at Perimeter Institute - and ICREA Prof. Antonio Acín, together with ICFOnian Marc-Olivier Renou from Inria and colleagues from the Institut Néel CNRS, the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel - LKB, the KU Leuven, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and LAAS-CNRS. One of my dreams was to visit CERN and it happened today! Thank you Jeff Wiener, Tim Smith and Sascha Schmeling for hosting us today and for very productive discussions. There are so many opportunities for Perimeter Institute and CERN to develop outreach activities such as teacher networks in developing countries and working together in quantum education as we move into the #IYQST (international year of Quantum Science and Technology). Seeing CERN was as amazing as I imagined. Seeing the antimatter lab where last year they demonstrated that antimatter interacts with gravity like matter does was amazing. That lab has a decelerator rather than a particle accelerator like the Large Hadron Collider! https://lnkd.in/dfsJSVQr CERN provides a great example of the benefits of investing in basic science for humanity. The work at CERN on particle physics led to: innovations in cancer treatments using beams of photons and ions; computer technologies including the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee while at CERN and areas in climate research to name just a few.
