The Trust is continuing to mark National Indigenous History Month. Last year, the Trust unveiled a new provincial plaque in Moose Factory. We worked with Moose Cree Elders, Knowledge-keepers and the community to centre Moose Cree worldviews and the long, complex relationship with European traders and settlers. The Trust continues to mark National Indigenous History Month (#NIHM2024) by honouring and acknowledging the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples. On September 30, 2022, during the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in partnership with the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and Algoma University, the Trust unveiled an updated provincial plaque commemorating the history of the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School. This plaque was updated to correct misinformation regarding the purpose of the residential school system and to include the lived experiences of the Indigenous students who attended the school. The impact of residential schools is still felt by generations of Indigenous peoples today. Commemorating these difficult stories through the provincial plaque program is one of the ways that the Trust aims to provide an opportunity for all to learn and reflect about the full complexity of our shared heritage. Please take a moment to watch the video commissioned by the Trust and learn more about the updated plaque’s significance: https://lnkd.in/gcENHmMQ Learn more about the history of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School: https://lnkd.in/g-mQF8Ye
