Edmonton Arts Council is seeking a new Executive Director. The Executive Director serves as a collaborative and visionary leader. Reporting to the Board of Directors, they advance the EAC’s role in the Edmonton arts ecology as a leading voice, ensuring the achievement of the organization’s mission, mandate, and core values. The individual leverages organizational resources to build, nurture and expand partnerships increasing the EAC’s reach into the community. They provide strategic and inspirational vision for supporting artists and organizations in their capacity to reach equity seeking communities, including through the Indigenous principle. The Executive Director is accountable for the integration and implementation of the organization’s financial, operational, human resources and programmatic strategies. Et si l'Art pouvait changer le monde? (What if Art Could Change the World?), is due to hit bookstores in Quebec and French Canada in September. This essay sets out the cultural, social, economic, environmental, and diplomatic issues that Art can help reframe and possibly contribute to resolve. I am trying to illustrate the healing and enchanting power of art and culture in an era marked by polarisation and conflict of all kinds and to propose a path forward for the cultural sector. Is is also a plea for the importance and relevance of renewing and growing significantly public funding of the arts as a way to enhance democratic participation and freedom for everyone and everybody.

i first met Alex Sarian when we were both invited to a leadership intensive at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business #humblebrag and immediately hit it off. There are a few people in the arts sector who I can truly say get "it" - "it" being the existential moment the arts sector is in and how it will need to reinvent itself from a sophisticated pastime of an elite class to something truly accessible and inclusive for everyone everywhere. One of the things I offer is the “Data Equity Consultation,” a dedicated time for me to listen and advise on the unique shapes and forms of data equity. I’ve spent countless hours in those consultations on: ●  Analyzing DEI data ●  Collecting demographic data in new CRMs ●  Setting up provincial (and potentially national) demographic data ●  Building inclusive teams for Responsible AI ●  Designing in-house data ethics committees and operationalizing them ●  Redesigning dashboards after CRM transitions, focusing on fundamental data equity questions, not just charts… They taught me that “data equity” can look very different from team to team, org to org, and project to project. So, to honor my daily work commitment – of aligning the lived and learned experiences of communities represented, counted, measured, and reported in data – I designed eight fundamental questions to ask in every project. This is what I want to offer you today - 8 questions to consider about data equity. If you haven’t started asking these questions, now is the time. The arts sector suffered a great blow during lockdown, experiencing a significant drop in revenues, especially in sales. According to the Arts Data Platform, revenue from sale of goods and services in Canada's arts charities nosedived by a staggering 77% from 2018 to 2021. This infographic is created with assistance from the Arts Data Platform. By utilizing the filter function, it's convenient to integrate the statistics from the Charity Directorate. This allows us to identify trends in Canada as a whole. The Arts Data Platform is a comprehensive resource for the arts sector, offering an aggregated dataset of 4000+ charitable arts organizations, drawn from charities’ data submitted to the CRA through the annual charitable return, the T3010.
