The spotted lanternfly (SLF) is just a border away. If you're travelling cross-border this summer, you can take measures to help prevent SLF and other invasives from accidentally hitching a ride with you. 📱 Learn how to identify and report invasive pests to EDDMaps.org or the Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711. 🚘️If you're travelling back from infested areas of the US, like New York or Pennsylvania, prevent accidentally transporting SLF into Canada by checking your car, camper, trailer, or RV for pests or egg masses before making the return trip. Check any camping gear before returning too! 🔥 Don't move firewood and familiarize yourself with legislation related to firewood movement. 🔗 Learn more about how to take action: https://bit.ly/3aA68uo

🔎 We’ve been looking everywhere for the spotted lanternfly! Our surveys show that it’s not in Canada yet and we want to keep it that way! This insect feeds on over 100 species of trees and plants, including grapevines and fruit trees and would be devastating for Canada’s fruit 🍇 🍎, wine 🍷, and ornamental nursery industries. 🌳 Learn more: https://bit.ly/3yf9YYy #SpottedLanternfly #InvasiveSpecies #PlantHealth

Forestry contributes significantly to Canada’s economy, accounting for ~7% of Canada’s total annual exports. Annual timber losses in Canada due to invasive species are estimated to cause $720 million in losses (CFIA, 2004). Preventing the spread of invasive species such as mountain pine beetle, hemlock woolly adelgid, and more will help protect our forest industry. You can learn more here: https://bit.ly/3l8NLSC

Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) attacks and kills hemlock trees by feeding on nutrient and water storage cells at the base of needles. After hiking in a hemlock stand, especially in infested areas, use a lint roller to remove potential HWA that may be on your clothing and gear to limit it's spread. Learn more about how to prevent the spread of HWA here: https://bit.ly/3vUPrra

Be aware of Spotted Lanternfly (SLF). If you're travelling to an area of the U.S. known to have SLF infestations, it's important to check your vehicle for nymphs, adults, and egg masses before you return to Canada to prevent transporting SLF across the border. If you spot SLF, remember to SNAP IT, CATCH IT, and REPORT IT! Along with collecting and freezing the specimen, you should take a photo of it. Make sure to include important information like location and habitat it was found in. Report all sightings to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
