It was a pleasure to attend a panel discussion at the Economic Club of Canada featuring Dawn Desjardins, Brendon Bernard, and Benjamin Tal. The panel addressed critical economic issues such as rising CPI, inflation, productivity challenges, and the economic gap between Canada and the U.S. They also highlighted the need for improved housing and immigration policies and discussed the long-term impacts of COVID-19 and the potential benefits of AI on future growth. Front row seats to see this esteemed panel of economists, with one of my favorites as moderator - the best of the best and long time friend Vassy Kapelos. A few key takeaways: - Immigration policy conflicts with housing policy and immigration #s are undercounted by about 1 million, with the majority of temporary resident visa holders remaining in the country after their visa expires - the housing crisis is worse than we see thru the data. - BoC moves on interest rates too slow - core CPI was at 1.6% months ago. - Interprovincial trade barriers such as 7% tariffs on goods and services is a barrier to productivity and competitiveness in this country (why don't we have free trade within our own borders?). - We are a country of small businessses and small businesses face too much red tape in this country - there is no incentive to grow/expand. Start ups have no incentive to stay here and are taking their products to the US. - Labour crunch is hitting youth only -new grads and young people are having trouble finding work, whereas service jobs are growing and it's difficult to measure the productivity of service jobs. Great job to the Economic Club of Canada for putting on an informative last event of the season!
