In the 2024 Spring/Summer Issue of Designlines, we focus on New Builds and “celebrate the profound impact of creating something new, not just as an architectural endeavour but as a testament to laying down roots and shaping the very essence of our city’s identity,” writes Editor-in-Chief Joseph Cicerone. On the cover, PLANT Architect Inc. conjures a lush, established garden in the contemporary renovation of a home in Whitby, calling on the existing environments to curate a multi-purpose outdoor space. We also dive into the latest workings of DesignAgency, get a sneak peek of designer Julian Gregory's Farfalline lighting prototype and take a look at creativity around the city through the scope of Ballooms founder Dylan Kwacz. Toronto has been through an ebb and flow regarding its artistic spaces. Being an independent maker in the city can often mean facing displacement, high costs and ultra-tight quarters. Consequently, many artists have been forced to seek new hubs. Addressing this need, Industrial Arts offers a solution. This 5-acre working site in southern Markham features three industrial-zoned buildings, each about 30,000 square feet, providing ample space for artistic endeavours. Waard Ward is a collective cultivating art and community through floristry. Founded by Petrina Ng in 2019, the collective is led by Syrian florist Abd Al-Mounim and includes community organizers/Syrian newcomers Hanen Nanaa and Shoruk Alsakni, educator Laura Ritacca and curator/educator Patricia Ritacca. Despite floristry and gardening are core to the collective’s work, Waard Ward’s passion extends beyond the canvas and into the lives of others, bridging gaps within and beyond the art world.
