Remember when rollerblades were all the rage? If so, you might remember when purple loosestrife was all over the news too. In the 1990s, this invasive plant took over wetlands across Southern Ontario. You don't hear about it much anymore thanks to a tiny bug called the Neogalerucella beetle.🐛 CVC's Invasive Species Management team, thanks to scientist Donna Mackenzie, is pleased to have recently released two booster populations of beetles in areas where purple loosestrife is making a comeback. These bugs from Europe are a biocontrol that were released after thorough testing and only feed on purple loosestrife. We wish these little guys the best of luck at their new job, fighting harmful invasive species in the Credit River Watershed! 🥊🌱

Dedicated to conserving, restoring, developing and managing the Credit River Watershed.
About us
Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is a local conservation authority established by the Ontario government in 1954 to protect, restore and enhance the natural environment of the Credit River watershed. That watershed is the area of land where all rainfall, snowmelt and runoff drain into lands and waters flowing into the Credit River. CVC creates connections between people and nature, knowledge and action. It inspires a deep appreciation for the role of nature in keeping people connected, healthy and happy. CVC is a member of Conservation Ontario.

CVC’s real-time rain gauges got a workout yesterday as storms moved through our watershed. Locations within Mississauga received over 100 millimetres of rain, which is more than we typically see throughout all of July! During the same event, locations further north in our watershed received only 10 to 20 millimetres. This spatial variability is typical of intense rain events. Some locations can receive heavy rain, while nearby locations can be relatively dry. Data from CVC’s rain gauges are updated in real-time on our website and can be found here https://lnkd.in/egNcEZbu #ONStorm

With the recent rainfall events, we estimate a total of 60,000L of water has been captured by our smart blue roof, including 70mm from this morning's rainfall alone. ☔ All the collected water serves multiple purposes: 💧 Helping to cool the building 💧Storing and reusing it for non-potable purposes or, 💧Reduce the risk of flooding by releasing the water slowly into the municipal stormwater system Learn more about the smart blue roof project at cvc.ca/SmartBlueRoof. #SmartTechnology #GreenInfrastructure #RainWater

Our smart blue roof is thriving in these summer storms! The collection of rainwater can help reduce the risk of flooding, stream erosion and other ecological impacts by releasing the rainwater slowly into the municipal stormwater system.
Credit Valley Conservation's smart blue roof successfully retained another 71.2 mm of rainfall this morning. This is in addition to the 48 mm that was caught last week Thursday. In total, we have accumulated a 119.2 mm (47,000 L) on our roof top with these two events. Last week, our Integrated Watershed Monitoring Program (IWMP) staff wrapped up the forest breeding bird surveys for the year. The staff were total champs for getting up early to record observations of birds they see or hear at forest monitoring stations across the watershed. By analyzing this information, we can gauge the forest bird community's condition and monitor any changes occurring over time. #25YearsOfIWMP
