Canada’s leading charitable conservation organization, taking and inspiring action to sustain wildlife and wild places.

About us

The Calgary Zoo is home to nearly 1,000 creatures across 119 species, and is one of the city’s favourite family destinations. One third of Calgarians visit every year, and more than 97,000 have annual memberships. Operated by the Calgary Zoological Society, a not-for-profit society founded in 1929, the Calgary Zoo is one of just five zoos in Canada accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Our mission is to become Canada’s leader in wildlife conservation. To that aim, we operate a Centre for Conservation Research. Our biologists have earned international recognition in the science of species recovery and reintroduction. Learn about the steps we are taking to inspire change, and set a new path for the future. Check out the July issue of Association of Zoos and Aquariums Connect to learn more about our Alberta Biodiversity Festival. Together with our partners, we're committed to sustaining wildlife and wild places. After all, it's in our nature! 🌿💚

Nestled where the #RockyMountains meet sprawling grasslands, the Alberta Biodiversity Festival stands as a beacon of collaboration and #Conservation ⛰️. Organized by the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo, Government of Alberta, and Bow Habitat Station, this annual festival promotes environmental stewardship and community engagement. 🤝 Major goals of the festival are to strengthen #CommunityOutreach and local partnerships, ultimately inspiring action and advocacy for Alberta’s unique ecosystems. Through hands-on activities, visitors gain a deeper understanding of Alberta’s rich #Biodiversity and learn practical ways to support wildlife and wild places. 🦌🌲 Inclusivity is central to the festival, allowing visitors of all ages and backgrounds to engage in ways that matter to them. From interactive touch tables with biofacts to arts and crafts, #Educational board games, and theatre presentations, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. 🎨 Art bridges science and community engagement at the festival. Collaborations with local artists have resulted in stunning permanent installations at the Zoo, including vibrant #Murals and costumes inspired by local #Fauna. #Indigenous perspectives are integrated throughout the festival as traditional knowledge keepers from Treaty Seven territory share insights on their ancestral connection to the land. They explore topics like traditional #Medicine and the effects of #Bison population decline on the Parklands. 🌿 In its third year, the Alberta Biodiversity Festival continues to serve as an engaging platform for raising awareness about local #Ecosystems and conservation initiatives across #Canada. The organizers continue to embrace adaptability to address #Environmental challenges and shape the festival's future. 📰 In Connect, read more about the ongoing impact of this unique festival: https://bit.ly/3zvduOV. #Alberta #Education #Environment #CommunityEngagement #Wildlife #Inclusivity #Festivals #Zoos

It's #NationalRegistrarDay! 🎉 Registrars are official record keepers and our amazing Zoological Records and Animal Relocations (ZRAR) team—Angela, Cara, and Deanna (left to right)—manage our Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) and train our staff to use it effectively. ZIMS is a global database that tracks detailed information about animal origins, pedigree, health statistics, husbandry, welfare notes, and significant life events. Thanks to our dedicated zoological registrars, we maintain crucial records that enhance the health and welfare of our animals, providing them world-class care at every stage of their lives. Thank you, ZRAR team, for everything you do! ❤️ #YourZooYYC

In case you can’t tell, we’re all about keeping things green! 💚 Did you know that we make some of our compost here onsite? It’s true! Our Horticulture team utilizes fruit and vegetable scraps produced at the zoo to fill our compost bins. The team can usually collect around 50 gallons of kitchen waste to be turned into valuable, nutrient-rich compost to be spread in our gardens! ♻️🌿 We’re proud to work with like-minded organizations committed to minimizing their environmental impact. Together, with our friends at WM, we’re making strides toward a greener, more sustainable future! 🌍🌱 #YourZooYYC #Sponsor #SponsorshipOpportunities
