This was the first set I designed from scratch! Given the prompt "Lloyd jungle bike" on my third day of working at LEGO, I was given complete freedom to try a fresh take on a Ninjago staple. This was an excellent way to learn the LEGO design process and realize just how much effort goes into each and every set LEGO designs. As my manager put it "If you aren't sick of your set by the end of the design process, you haven't built it enough." I've built this bike at least 30 times (I counted).

Off-road sci-fi vehicles were definitely a source of inspiration in both color and design language, since it felt like they captured the rugged, all-terrain look we were striving for. The suspension was a challenge to integrate with the detachable surfboard/flier, but ended up being solved by borrowing Freddy Charters' brilliant solution in 71700.

As with every LEGO set, credit goes to the graphic designer and BI designer for their incredible work in helping the set be all it could be.
Graphic design was done by Kjeld Walther Sorensen.
Building instruction were done by Brian Kristoffersen.

On a sentimental note, this set represents the fulfillment of a childhood dream that I never would have thought possible. It's always going to have a special place in my heart :)

I had the privilege of working on this set with my mentor Leonardo Francisco Lopez (leo026). I was tasked with the design of Kai's catamaran, with the goal of creating a speedboat that transforms into a catamaran complete with shooters and a sail. The function ended up taking a month to figure out cleanly, and I'm pretty happy with the final result! Credit goes to Niek van Slagmaat (toothdominoes) for the clever solution for angling the catamaran outriders. Triangles, man!

Graphic design was done by Angel Grau.
Building instructions were done by Brian Kristoffersen.

EDIT: I forgot to mention a fun detail that many people probably won't notice but I was quite proud of: when the catamaran has its pontoons extended, the flame-yellow flag pieces line up and Angel designed stickers for them that align too!

Niek van Slagmaat (toothdominoes) and I were tasked with designing these small price point battle packs between the ninjas and some familiar faces from the past. We each did two, and it was an excellent opportunity to see how much fun and value we could add to these smaller sets. In this one, I settled on a simple Torii early on since it's such a classic Ninjago icon, and played with various color schemes until the red/tan combo with the flame yellow tree stood out. Since we were including a spinning battle platform in each set, I included a simple dummy that can hold some of the extra weapons included in the pack. The weapon pack was designed by Esben Floe.

All in all, it's a fun little set with builds that (hopefully) allow the real stars to shine: the awesome minifigures designed by Angel Grau and Michael Patton. Yes, Ryu was a source of inspiration for Kai's 'fit ;)

Like I mentioned in the 71730 notes, Niek van Slagmaat (toothdominoes) and I were tasked with designing these small price point battle packs between the ninjas and some familiar faces from the past. This was the second one I got to do and had a ton of fun coming up with a cool location for a ninja-snake showdown. I've always loved LEGO's shrine builds from the days of Johnny Thunder (7409 was a particular favorite) and I was super excited to design a little snake statue in a bamboo forest! The excellent minifigs make the set though, and credit goes to Angel Grau and Michael Patton for their amazing work on bringing a fan favorite back!

71755 is the 5th and last set I've worked on for Ninjago. Large playsets are not in my comfort zone as a builder, so being tasked with designing a $100 playset was intimidating! However, this ended up being a fantastic learning opportunity and I am pretty proud of the results.

This set is a collaboration with Esben Fløe, who designed the excellent Wojira as I was still new to the company and handling the whole thing was probably a bit too much! Starting from an excellent sketch model whipped up in a morning by Markus Rollbühler, my challenge was to capture a Ninjago take on Atlantis. As gold is one of the key colors of Ninjago, I decided to have a treasure room at the bottom of the main building with a circular door to frame the dragon coin. At one point we actually had the Monkey King staff in the treasure room, since part of Journey to the West includes Sun Wukong obtaining the staff from the Ao Guang, the Dragon King of the East Sea in his underwater temple. The layout of the temple was planned as a sort of arena for Nya to do battle with Wojira so having the different buildings connect with clips and bars made some sense so the whole set could sit flat on a shelf or be curved into a semi-circle. As a kid, I loved adding my own builds to existing sets and I hope the simple bar/clip system will invite builders to create their own underwater buildings to attach to and expand the temple!

Two fun details I enjoyed including: the mysterious yellow eggs sitting on Kalmaar's desk (where do they come from? Build the model and see!) and the singing bass plaque mounted above the Prince's balcony :)

Credit to Mike Patton for the super cool stickers and Lis Christensen for her tireless work on the Building Instructions.

The first of two Friends sets I worked on! My brief was to create a rescue van and we decided to tell the story of Nova meeting her dog Pickle for the first time! The poor little guy was living in a cardboard box until Nova finds him and calls the animal rescue hotline on the bench in the bus shelter. Dr. Marlon then arrives and the two of them can feed, wash, and repair Pickle’s wheels in the kitted out rescue van! As a kid I always loved toys with fold out areas to create bigger play spaces, so I developed this model to have a removable fold out rescue center! It was super fun to design and I really hope kids and adults have a blast with this one :)

We were also experimenting with more environmental storytelling in this set with an alternate expression for Nova and cues for story beats in the order of the build and the stickers. There's a logical flow to the build since you start with Pickle's box and the bus stop with the bench advertising the animal rescue hotline. Then you build the rescue van after Nova has called it! Unlike minifigures, minidolls can't have a second face printed on the back so we include a whole extra head if we want to have a variety of emotions available. The feedback has been great so we'll see what the future holds!

One of the big challenges with this set was designing the back pod to be stable during building and play. Originally the build would hinge open in two halves, but there were issues making it robust enough for younger kids to build, especially 6 year olds. I opted instead for a solid central column that the side pieces would attach to, solving the stability problem and making the "room" created when the box is open feel a bit more full.

I got to design a proper gamer kid bedroom! I have a gaming setup myself, so it was super fun making sure everything a streamer would need is there: desktop pc, dual monitors, microphone, webcam, keyboard, gamer chair, energy drinks, and so so many RGBs. Credit for the excellent stickers goes to Ioana Popescu, who suggested the reference for the game that Zac and Nova are playing together! Since Nova likes collectables, there are a couple of neat little builds scattered around her room, including an Ogel skull-in-a-jar! There’s ramp for Pickle to get up onto the bed, and a workbench for Nova to give his wheels a tune up. She may be too cool for girly stuff, but Nova might have a secret hidden behind her bookshelf…

This set was my first introduction to the new Friends characters, and the work that had already been done by the team meant the set almost designed itself! I remember messaging one of the Friends concept designers, Andrea, about what things Nova would have in her room apart from her streaming setup, and I got roughly 5 paragraphs back about her (Nova's) motivations, interests, ambitions, and fears. It made filling the rest of her room with fun, character-accurate accessories so easy, and reflects the incredible work that went into designing this new generation of Friends. I was so impressed by the depth of the design work that was being done that when I wrapped up working on *redacted*, I chose to move to the Friends team and I'm glad I did :)

This was a super fun and quick set to design. When I'm looking at creating a polybag or smaller set, I really try to make them a useful addition to the rest of the sets in the wave or a good way to get some of our new characters. In this case, being a brand new theme with lots of new molds, colors, and characters, I really tried to make a good starter pack with as much new stuff as possible!

The Dreamling body that Z-blob has is one of the cooler elements we made, and the possibilities are huge for making cute little versions of other minifigs! One super important thing we committed to early when working on it was making sure it could hold accessories. That immediately makes the play and customization so much better, and I'm really glad we were able to keep that feature in through all of the testing and engineering that happens with new pieces.

The Croc Car! Way back in 2019 we were developing Cooper as a character, and his passion for anything fast meant we started to look into cool vehicles for him. When Logan was added into the mix as Cooper's best friend and his story began to take shape, we experimented with what a beast car would look like. Originally, it was a cool looking car with tentacles and claws sticking out of it, but kids were not really understanding the monster angle so we decided to explore an actual creature and go from there. After testing a few animal-themed cars with sketches and rough concept models, it was clear we had our direction! As with almost every model in the lineup, this passed through a lot of hands before I took a swing at it, with awesome takes by Luis Castaneda and Heiko König before I got my hands on it.

The biggest challenges was figuring out a system to have both wheels and legs be able to attach. I tried having them attach using the same connection point, but it became clear the wheels needed to sit lower than the legs and I ended up stacking connectors to make it work. This is one of the only models that requires disassembly to make the two different versions, and I put a lot of time into making sure it wasn't hard to remove the wheel attachment assembly. If you want just a cool red truck without any of the Dreamcrafted parts attached, the base version will do the job! I also managed to put in a really fun function to launch a disc in the grill with a lever in the back of the truck. A technic axle runs through the cab to the front and pushes the disc to fire it out of the launcher piece.

The neon yellow color was a fairly late decision in development. Originally we had the underbelly in tan, but on a whim I decided to try out the fancy new color and suddenly the whole set came alive! All in all, this one was a blast to work on and I'm really excited for kids to get their hands on this one.

A lot of the fun of working on the development of Dreamzzz was having half built sketches and doodles that I built for fun end up inspiring entire sets. In this case, during one of our intense weeks of just concept building, I created a simple fantasy deer with branches for antlers. Not an uncommon concept in the fantasy genre, but somehow we hadn't done it before in a LEGO set! My creative lead, Cerim Manovi, spotted it and asked our concept artist, Matt Betteker, to sketch up some ideas for a set based around it. From there, the idea of a fantasy stable for Dream Creatures was born! Catcus, as we call him, was also a doodle on my desk that ended up being a kid favorite in tests and resulted in his inclusion in this set and the Turtle Van. His face is almost unchanged from the doodled face I made with paint markers over two years ago!

I was really excited to be able to do the final design for this one, and tried to pack in all the colors and plants and Dreamlings I could. The decorating the deer's antlers with different flowers ended up being a popular Dreamcraft experience so we pushed for it. Fun fact, the giant wheat stalks can also fit the deer! We also liked the play of chopping down the giant wheat, milling it into grain in the windmill, and feeding it to the animals :)

Credit goes to Kenza Faten Statou for the cute graphics.

For this launch of Friends, I agreed to take on a number of smaller sets, in my mind equating the work of one larger set. Turns out that’s not really how things work and this ended up being one of my busiest periods so far at LEGO! This Cat Playground was developed in the midst of that, and ended up being one of my favorites of the whole lot. I managed to fit two figures, two cats, and a decently sized build in WITH a function for a 5+, $10 set.

For those who don’t intend to get this one, there’s a lever on the back that allows a center section to slide, hiding the food as if it’s been eaten, and revealing a gift in the litter box. This was surprisingly challenging to design for 5 year old age mark, since we can’t be sure kids will push the bricks all the way down at that age. This meant I had to have a plate of gap above the sliding mechanism and several pieces in the build that only exist to prevent build errors that could impact the function. We also avoid stickers in 5+ models, which meant we could decorate the litter box tile! Our excellent graphics lead, Ioana Popescu, designed the 2x4 tile so it would work independent of the function as a big litter box, which hopefully makes it appealing to MOC builders.

There was also some spirited debate about which way the orange chubby cat’s eyes should point, whether it was cuter for him to be cross eyed or have eyes pointing outward. I was on team outward but was overruled. Poundcake ended up cross eyed and I’ve come around to thinking this was the right choice :)

I’m quite happy with amount of play and value packed into this $20 set. There were a few mandatory elements for a proper hamster playground: a big hamster wheel, a tube, and hamster balls. I realized that the Sandy helmet from the old SpongeBob sets fit the hamsters really well, and realized this could be my only opportunity to introduce a new color for that element! We tried having the balls all in the transparent orange, but found it hid the orange hamster completely. We ended up splitting them in half so you get a full orange bubble and a full clear bubble in the set since they’re such cool pieces. It made it easier to see the hamsters inside and made it more visible when they were rolling! We also briefly looked at transparent yellow instead of orange to make the bubbles Classic Space friendly but found it looked like the hamsters had had an accident while rolling around!

I was able to piggyback on City’s dark orange tube connector piece color change for 60419, and used some orange tube pieces to get the classic hamster tube look. This particular location is in Heartlake valley, in the same area as Autumn’s House. Therefore, we matched the foliage color and I paid the color change for our new leaf cluster element in the fall orange-yellow color, which I double-dipped with on another set coming soon.

Finally, Julie Rasmussen nailed our first ever sunflower seed tile which is already seeing use in other sets across the company. Some might wonder what the purpose of the simple little merry-go-round is in the set: it’s not leftover budget as some might assume, it’s actually what we call an “early success”. We want kids to have a great early experience with the build to inspire them to keep going and also give them something to play with early in case they want a break later. These are meant to be small, easy builds that can do a lot to help kids nervous about embarking on their first LEGO set.
