This is, technically speaking, my "first" LEGO set :D, as I started and finished working on it first among my 3 models in this wave. I was handed a wonderful sketch model by the mech master Niek van Slagmaat (Toothdominoes) and tasked to bring it to the final stage, while learning everything about the development process of an official LEGO product.

With the basics pretty much set by the previous wave of EVO mechs, I think it was a perfect starting point for me to not be overwhelmed on my first go. That said, I still tried my best to bring something new to the table, so that fans who got the previous EVO mechs may still get little surprises building this. That's where I came up with the idea of making the separable weapon and shield-hat/hat-shield (depending on your perspective on matters) on the Bone Warrior’s mech, and the "boomer-wing" on Lloyd's Golden mech (I don't think we have ever officially agreed if it was meant to be a big blade or a boomerang - it's up for imagination! I did always see it as a boomerang myself ;) ) This feature was heavily inspired by what set me on the path of being a LEGO fan all those years ago - Bionicle!

Another thing I'm pretty proud of with this model, is that I managed to get the Nexo shield tiles printed as a deco - I hope the fans would appreciate it! Shoutout to Renato for the awesome graphics on that tile, as well as the rest of the graphics team (Michael, Angel and Margit) for the cool figures and banner that brought the models to life, and Michael M. who did the building instruction. Teamwork!

While this is the smallest of the 3 models I got to work on this wave, it is my personal favourite! The task came out as a little surprise along the way of product development, and I was asked to give it a go making some different sketch models for a Jay jet, and eventually, I'm grateful that the team trusted me as a newbie enough that they let me take it through the development, on top of the two other models I was working on already.

Compared to the EVO mechs and dragon, I got more creative liberty on this one as there is no format/aesthetics to adhere to, but more importantly, it was a great design challenge with the $10 price point and 6+ age mark. I think the final product you get certainly gives a great value, both in terms of the piece count and the size of the jet, and the wings and side engine exhaust have some fun geometries that would hopefully delight builders of all ages.

Plus, the 2x2 tiles on the wings are, again, printed! :D Awesome graphics by Michael and Julia did the building instruction. Teamwork!

This was the last one I finished working on in this first launch. Again, super grateful for the opportunity to take on this model on top of the other ones despite being new to the team and the company. It's awesome that I gotta get a taste of almost all the Ninjago icons in my first run as a ninja (mech, vehicle, dragon... Guess I still need a temple to call for Bingo! :P)

I designed this one with a very similar thought process in 71781 Lloyd's Mech Battle EVO, I wanted to stay true to the EVO dragon style while keeping it fresh for the fans who try to collect them all, hence I proposed the more upright stance with the curvy neck for the water dragon. I'm also quite happy that after tons of exploration, we managed to find a fresh colour scheme that works for Nya and also pops on the box.

I might be biased, but I have to give a big shoutout to Margit for the graphics on the dragon head - it is my personal favourite out of the 6 Core dragon heads :D And thanks to the rest of the graphics team (Michael, Angel and Renato) as well for the cool figures and banner that brought the model to life, and Michael M. who did the building instruction. Teamwork!

My 4th LEGO set and first attempt with a higher price point! I was extremely thrilled to be given the privilege of bringing this one from sketch to finish again. And believe it or not, after being a LEGO fan for 18 years and (once) an architecture student in university, this is the very first original LEGO building I have designed haha, and I really tried to make the most out of it. There are many cool little details like the rock lions at the door, the stone lantern and the bridge (so happy I got to keep the bridge build from the original sketch :D), but then there are also many cool play features spread throughout the model! I tried really hard to come up with traps that are different from the classic trap doors and falling boulders (well there is one with the falling boulder but it is done quite differently than usual I think), so that hopefully long term LEGO fans would still be excited to play with them when they get the set.

On top of that, the biggest technical challenge was getting the balcony enough support without losing the organic shape of the tree. It may not be obvious from first glance but having the balcony so far away from the main structure has been quite a challenge, under the guidelines for official products. With the bridge being purely ornamental and having to make sure you can press minifigs down onto the balcony, I ended up going out of my comfort zone and looking for answers in Technic elements. And a fun fact regarding the balcony: Throughout the development, some of my colleagues keep telling me "that balcony looks like it will collapse if you press on it", to a certain point my associate lead just asked me "can you actually make a play feature for the balcony to collapse?" - and that was the origin of that play feature.

One last thing that I would like to highlight is the exclusive printed lanterns and the cool yellow leaves colour change, I was really pushing for these two as I think they would be quite a useful element for MOCers out there. Looking forward to seeing some cool MOCs with cool yellow trees! :D

And finally, awesome stickers by Michael, but also thanks to the graphics team (Angel and Renato) for all the cool figures that make our models come to life. And credits to Julia also for the building instruction. Teamwork!

5th and final model I have worked on during my first year at LEGO! This one is a bit of a special case as I wasn't originally assigned to the set, but I was brought in to help crack the technical challenges on this model so that Markus can further push for all the cool details and functions you now see on the NINJAGO CITY Markets. I was super happy as I have been quite excited for this model since day one - an actually transforming bike without rebuilding! :D

This model is also a true embodiment of teamwork in LEGO sets, not only because I got to finalize the model alongside with Markus, but even before we settled on this final look for the mech (from Dimitris), there were dozens of different attempts by almost every designer on the team with the concept. It has been a truly eye-opening and humbling experience for my first year as a LEGO designer to see how much effort can be involved behind this relatively small mech model, and I'm just happy to be part of it. :)

Set number 6! While I didn't get to work on any product for the January wave this year, I got to do my first polybag and 2-in-1 model! It was a very fun and different design challenge than a regular set, I've learnt a lot about the constraints in production and it made me appreciate polybags a lot more. Would love to do more of them in the future!

The brief was to create a microscale version of the cool 71791: Zane's Dragon Power Spinjitzu Race Car from 2023, and then make a B model from it. Since the base model isn't really a 2-in-1, we had to be creative about it and I tried to make a jet that LOOSELY based on 71770: Zane's Golden Dragon Jet. I am pretty happy with the funky angled wing construction, which resemble the transforming wing function on the Dragon Jet - oh and the car also spins incredibly well!

Set number 7! This one will forever hold a special place in my heart!! As a designer, we usually get a brief with a somewhat fixed concept, but this set came from an open brief. We know that Ninjago has been running for so long, a lot of the fans that grew up with the show has become young adults/adults by now (I mean, I myself was just a kiddo visiting the toy shops when Ninjago was launched!), so we were wondering if we can create something for the more up-in-age fans. We didn't know what it would be, and for the longest time, we didn't even know if it would happen!

While I was never put on the brief, I had the idea of creating one of these epic rock diorama (something I've been obsessing looking at for years in my free time) and put a Ninjago spin to it by turning it into a stone dragon, and I eventually got the chance to throw a sketch model together during our 1-week boost and pitched it, and luckily there was enough love and passion for the model around the office, so it managed to make its way to the shelf! :D

When designing this set, I treated it as a love letter to Ninjago and there are 3 Easter eggs hidden in the model. The first one is the Chima Chi crystal - it was a personal choice when I put it in and it neither confirms nor denies the correlation between Ras and Chima haha (and turns out the writers agree!) The second Easter egg is a bit more abstract - but all the hidden colourful bricks inside this models are of colours that we've used on the Master Wu and the 6 core ninja, and you actually get the colours referencing every single one of them together under the battle rock. The last one is my favourite, which I won't spoil here - but you will know it when you build it, and it's a reference to one of my personal favourite Ninjago seasons! ;)

I hope this model will leave an impression the same way I felt when I first saw the Temple of Airjitzu and the first Ninjago City, and let people know that after 13 years, Ninjago can still bring something refreshing and unique to the table - And as always thanks to Michael for the awesome stickers and the rest of the graphics team (Angel and Renato) for the cool figures that make our models come to life, and Kirsten who worked on the building instructions. Teamwork!

Set number 8 is an exciting one and probably the most technically challenging LEGO model I have ever worked on, and that includes my time back then as a fan!

Ever since I joined the team, I have been obsessed with all the incredible large mechs that Ninjago has put out, especially the ones designed by Niek (toothdominoes). I never really imagined a day that the big mech duty would land on my plate as Niek has been knocking them out of the park. As someone who has only previously worked on the EVO mech battle set (and 2 mech MOCs from years ago that I am still too ashamed to post this day haha), I was both excited and extremely nervous about it.

The concept of a climber mech that can be hung around was developed by the front end team very early on, and Niek actually did the first sketch model, which established the "skinny mech" direction, then our design manager Heiko made a second pass that brought upon the "4-arm" concept, and when I took over, I tried to bring all that together and also add my personal spin on it. One particular stylistic choice was the hands on the extra arms, I really wanted to capture that peculiar way monkey hands look, as they were the animals I think of when it comes to "climbing".

I went into this thinking the biggest challenge was to find a way to secure the strings between the hook and the arm (which was still a major challenge that took months to crack), but I did not think about the implications that by allowing the mech to hang, we also have to make sure the entire mech is strong enough if a kid decides to swing it around, or deploy the hook mid-air and drop the mech while holding onto the hook - and even playing with the mech hanging was very different than how they would play with a regular mech that stands on the desk. And when you think you can just secure everything as much as you want by locking over everything, I got hit by the reality of how much weight the LEGO string can actually hold - we actually had to weigh this model throughout the development!

This is also a reason why I had to keep the articulation optimal, as it gets more and more difficult for the kids to handle when we put in more joints (especially when this guy already have 2 more arms than the usual mechs and this became a bigger problem when it's hanging around)... but fear not! This mech is actually quite posable because for the first time in mechs of this scale, we managed to bring back the ankle joints! And also because of the optimization on weight for the hanging, the mech is light enough to easily balance on some crazy poses - running, standing on one foot, kicking... all the action poses you need! I'm also really happy that I figured out a way to build the extra arms so that they can fold all the way down as shown on back of the box.

I also ended up facing my second greatest fear in this product- the Technic system! This is probably the most Technic pieces I have ever used on a LEGO model, but this is also probably the sturdiest thing I have ever built haha - as a lot of testings were involved during development, I can't even remember how many times I have dropped the mech from considerable height by accident, and the final version can actually sustain quite some fall! I'm pretty proud of that, especially for someone who was once known for making fragile MOCs hahaha.

Big thanks to Niek who gave me pointers on mech design every now and then, Renato who made some really awesome stickers and Brian who did a great job with the building instructions! Teamwork!

I usually only talk about sets that I get to finalize here, but this one is a special case, as the whole Micro NINJAGO City series was kind of my little pet project!

It was late 2022, and at the time NINJAGO City Markets was just finished and still waiting to be revealed in a year’s time, we were having some down time in the office, and I just thought “hmm it might be fun to spend the week making some microscale NINJAGO City!”

For one, it’s something I always wanted to try back then as an AFOL. I LOVE making microscale models of LEGO sets, but the two original NINJAGO City have been done by so many talented builders already, I always feel like my attempt would be nothing but redundant haha, so I never actually tried. However, this time around, with the Markets still being a secret to the rest of the world, I felt compelled to give it a go after all these years.

For two, of course, is the chance of making them as actual products! I’m not gonna pretend that making microscale sets is the most groundbreaking idea, we have been doing that in other products, fans have been doing it… BUT I always remember how special it felt as a modular fan back when 10230 Mini Modulars was announced, because for the first time, there IS an “official” version that every fan can own without being a master microscale builder themselves. So I built them and pitched them to the marketing team, and what do you know – suddenly we have four extra products for Ninjago 2024!

I didn’t get to finalize this one as I was busy with the Shrine and the Climber, but my colleague Esben did a lovely job keeping the look of my sketch model, while optimizing the build and getting it to budget - and even adding some Easter Eggs inside!

I also want to highlight the box - I was over the moon when packaging agreed to bring back the 2017 NINJAGO Movie box art, so that it looks like the actual set being shrunk! I hope fans of NINJAGO City will have fun building these more space-friendly versions (and less time spent on all the water tiles haha)

(Check out the notes on 40703: Micro NINJAGO City for more context on the development of Micro NINJAGO City as a whole~)

I don't have much to elaborate on this one, as it was developed simultaneously with the other first half year products, I also didn't get to finalize this one and instead my colleague Florian took over to optimize the build and get it down to price.

One little detail that I would like to point out is the roof of the leftmost building (as shown on the box) - in the real NINJAGO City Docks the roof was chopped off on one side to facilitate the modularity, which I always find it to be such a pity, so when I was sketching up this microscale one, I came up with the 1x2 plate with bars for the roof connection, so that you can have the whole roof centered when displayed on its own, and just slide it slightly to the right if you decide to connect it next to another set that has something in the way - and I'm glad that feature survived in the final set!

Set number 9! The biggest LEGO dragon of all times (so far), not only for NINJAGO, but in LEGO history!! This is also the biggest model I got to finalized (so far), so all that added up to a very daunting task - I would like to start by giving my talented colleague Aaron a shoutout, who gave me a solid starting point with his original concept model.

To make sure the end product lives up to the title of the biggest LEGO dragon ever, I actually went back to look at fan reviews on every previous big dragons before I started designing this, so that I can keep what people loved and tackle things we didn't necessarily perfect in the past - now I will just have to wait for the reviews to come and see what else can we improve on next time haha

My biggest concern going into this model, as shared by many fans in the comments upon the reveal, is the stability. It has significantly more pieces than the biggest dragons we had before, and even some of them were already pushing the limits of our big Galidor joints. I got the idea of adding rubber to its feet from all the big mechs we did, and it worked like a charm! When you place the dragon down on the table, you actually feel a very satisfying grip. In fact, I have done an experiment, it can hold 4 of our biggest dragons on its back and still stand proud!

It was also a constant back and forth to balance stability, aesthetics and articulation on this model, as they are all somewhat contradictory to each other. I try to cover up the gaps and structure as much as possible, while leaving enough room to pose. The one joint I'm most proud of is the mid-body joint. It was something Aaron had introduced on the original sketch and I really wanted to keep it, as the Ultra Golden Dragon also had it, so it felt like a step down to exclude it here. However, it was proven to be a structural challenge because when you try to swoosh the dragon around, you would always hold either half of the body, meaning that the joint has to have the strength to hold the weight of half the model. I’m really happy with the final solution, especially how seamlessly the two edges fit together when you rotate the body to one side (thanks to our design manager Heiko for that last-minute push on polishing the split line).

Finally I want to talk about Ras' throne, which is perhaps my favourite part! For the longest time we only had the sketch model of a big red dragon sitting there, and it looked cool but it felt like we needed that extra fantasy element to make it a truly epic Ninjago dragon… So one day, our Creative Lead Sven, ripped off this massive throne from a villain sketch model I pitched (which sadly didn’t make the cut), slapped it on the back of the dragon – and now it worked! I also remember myself thinking “Woah this looks sick, but good luck to whoever end up designing it to secure that giant throne on top of the dragon!” OH WELL! I'm super proud of the connection I ended up with, which is easy to take off, but secured enough you can violently swoosh the dragon around with the throne on!

I saw some comments questioning the necessity of the throne, but to me, it was the crucial piece to making this a well-rounded playset instead of just a big display model. You can play this whole set as a gigantic villain model that our heroes have to overcome (which is rare these days), and you can also have rescue play to free the Source Dragon from Lord Ras’ control. More importantly, when you take off the throne, you now have a complete good vs evil playset in hand! In my imagination, it’s like how you have two fights with the final boss in video games - first you have to knock off his throne, and then the fallen throne becomes an arena itself for a second boss battle!

Big thanks to Renato who did all the awesome graphics, especially on a dragon set, the graphics on the face and the wings can really make or break the model, and he knocked it out of the park! Also thanks to Jane who did the instructions. Teamwork!

The third entry of the Micro NINJAGO City collection is another one that I didn't get to finalize, instead it was executed by the designer who designed the actual NINJAGO City Gardens, Markus Rollbühler (moriartus)

This is also the one that I think I can take the least credit of the final product, as so much has been changed from the original sketch model. Despite the actual set being much larger than the two NINJAGO City modules that came before it, we were tasked to make this microscale version to be roughly the same value as the other two as they are all meant to be redeemable rewards on Insiders, which is something I didn't account for when I created the sketch model of course, as a result Markus has to do his magic to bring this to life.

Structurally speaking, this one is also the most challenging to make in this scale, with the big empty space below the museum and also the detachable little island on the side. On the big version there's a lot more space to strengthen these parts but on this microscale version where everything is a plate or two thick, it became much more of a structural issue for Markus to solve - but of course he solved them nicely in the end, to no one's surprise haha

Set number 10! The 4th and last entry to the Micro NINJAGO City collection - and this is the one I finally get to finalize! :D

In case if you haven't read about my post on the first one, this one is very much the sole reason the whole collection happened, as the main reason I felt like trying to build some microscale NINJAGO City models after all these years was that I can try my hands on building a micro NINJAGO City Markets before any fans do their take (at the time NINJAGO City Markets wasn't revealed to the world yet hehe), so I think it's also a fitting one for me to finalize in the end.

Similar to 40705 the Micro NINJAGO City Gardens, here I had to face a challenge of recreating something much bigger in real life to fit a similar value as the previous entries since they are all meant to be Insiders rewards - the exercise of bringing the original concept model to budget without losing any of the iconic details was truly an exhilarating one! (I LOVE that part of my job)

One of the biggest challenges I had with this one was to create that curvy top of the lime green tower. On the sketch model I used the element we used on the Speed Champions DB5 headlights, which would've been perfect, IF the element exists in lime green... As these models ended up being an extra product for Insiders Rewards, I didn't get the usual luxury of making a colour change. I tried a bunch of different solutions and in the end I came up with this combination of cut bow and pizza slice tile, which I'm pretty happy with, and I'm also proud that I managed to put in the other side of the cut bow as grass detail at the base

P.S. Sorry to disappoint but I didn't manage to keep the flushable toilet function here
