Ok, but Marrok had no business being one of the best Star Wars Minifigs of 2023

Written by (TFOL , platinum-rated reviewer) in Mexico,

Now more than ever, Star Wars content has been so hit or miss. The inconsistency in the quality of their projects is just so bizarre. You either get masterpieces like Andor (PLEASE make more sets for this show), and then a couple of months after that, there’s Mandalorian season 3… Personally, I think Ahsoka finds itself somewhere in the middle. It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely on the more disappointing end of things. Thankfully, more often than not, the Lego sets that come out for new Star Wars shows, regardless of their quality, are pretty great, and the Ahsoka sets are no exception… to some extent.

    The Build

T-6 Shuttle: We have only gotten this ship one other time before, back in the days of Clone Wars in 2011. It’s great that this shuttle has been revisited and updated to modern standards. Now, “modern standards” does not mean perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Yeah, I might as well deal with the problems first. The fact that the entire ship is only a one-seater is a really unfortunate disservice to the playability aspect, and the underside of the wings are completely undecorated. With other sets like the Mandalorian Starfighter, there was at least an attempt to keep the underside somewhat consistent with the default side, but here, they didn’t even try. It looks appallingly unfinished. Now, for the good stuff. Ignoring the barren underside, the ship is excellently detailed and doesn’t rely on stickers all that much. The printed windshield is great, I like that there’s some greebling along the fin, and I like the bubble turret on the back side with the engines, even if it does highlight some of the strange scaling going on. Although the fuselage should’ve been used for space to accommodate passengers, it is nice that it’s usable for storing accessories there. Finally, what really makes this ship worthwhile is the smooth and fun as heck rotating function. It works wonderfully, and you could spend awhile just spinning it. Additionally, the vertical flight orientation looks really cool (if you view it from the default side). Overall, the pros and cons balance each other out to make a ship that’s far from perfect but fairly displayable and fun.

    The Minifigs

Ahsoka: The highlight of Minifigs in this set and the entire Ahsoka subtheme is none other than Ahsoka herself. For a character whose outfit is just boring gray robes, they do an excellent job at capturing the fine details of her attire. The arm printing in particular is fantastic and really gives the figure a premium attribute. For her face prints, we get a smile, and a gritted teeth expression. A stern expression would’ve been suitable given how little emotion she displays in the show but the face prints we got are great nonetheless. The new lekku piece is fantastic, the length of the tails were nailed perfectly and the printing is immaculate. I hope to see the piece return to depict other versions of Ahsoka in the future. Finally, her accessories are 2 lightsabers with transparent blades, though I think frosty white blades with curved hilts would’ve worked better, but oh well. Overall, an outstanding minifigure and amongst the best Star Wars figures of 2023.

Professor Huyang: Droids are often some of the most entertaining characters in a Star Wars cast. Although Huyang just kinda showed up again out of nowhere with no explanation (unless I missed it idk), it’s nice to see him return and have an obscure character like him get a minifigure. It’s apparent that Lego only had the Clone Wars to work off of for source material, as he is tan here instead of his new metallic gray appearance, though I don’t really mind. The detail across the torso and legs is excellent. I like the exposed wires and signs of wear. There should’ve been a physical piece for his skirt though, or dual-molding at the very least. There’s a printed 1x1 tile attached on a neck bracket to represent his “backpack” and lastly, his unusual head shape was captured brilliantly along with excellent printing. I like how there’s also the suggestion of a monocle above his right eye. Overall, other than the lack of continuation for his skirt/Kama, this is a satisfying representation of the character with fantastic detail.

Sabine Wren: Although it’s not the fault of the figure, I find the relative muted colors on Sabine’s armor a bit jarring given how vibrant her armor was in Rebels. Also, the lack of a Jetpack or cape on a Mandalorian figure will always look strange to me. Again, not the fault of the figure. The armor and helmet are excellently detailed, although arm printing is noticeably missing, especially since they’ve been giving that to Mandalorian figs quite a bit lately. What was nailed perfectly however, was her facial expressions and purple hair, they perfectly captured the character. Lastly, her accessories include her 2 blasters and Ezra’s lightsaber. Overall, some detail on the arms would’ve been ideal, but otherwise a perfect minifigure.

Marrok: A potentially overlooked figure is the short-lived inquisitor, Marrok. Although he didn’t play a significant role in the show, he feels like a must-have minifigure solely cuz of how cool the figure turned out. Marrok gives off strong medieval vibes with his armor, and especially the helmet with the slits on the front. It’s a pretty unconventional look for a Star Wars character, but one that I really dig. Further heightening the coolness factor is the inspired use of the Grand Inquisitor’s armor piece, with a clip on the back to hold onto his saber, and the rust permeating his armor is a fantastic detail that gives the figure so much character. Since he was revealed to be a nobody, a plain black head under the helmet is completely appropriate. Finally, his accessory is the expected double-sided inquisitor saber. Overall, I couldn’t care less for Marrok in the show, but my thoughts on this figure are the polar opposite. I love this figure, and honestly it looks way cooler than his onscreen appearance.

    Value for Money

Perhaps even more egregious than the shuttle’s flaws is the price. Retail price just isn’t worth it for this set, especially in its objectively incomplete state. This is definitely a set that necessitates a significant discount before considering purchasing.

    Overall Opinion

This set is undoubtedly riddled with flaws. The incompleteness of the underside of the shuttle and the lack of space for more figures is pretty disappointing for the price they’re charging. On the other hand, the issues do get somewhat balanced out by the great level of detail on the default side of the ship and the admittedly fun rotating function, and the minifigure lineup here is arguably the strongest out of every 2023 Star Wars set. The good and the bad elements find themselves at odds in this set, but ultimately, I do like this set more than not. Although it needs modding, the ship is decent, and despite some nitpicks on Sabine and Huyang, the minifigures are astoundingly great. It is ultimately an essential set to have if you’re invested in the “Filoni-verse”, so I would certainly recommend it, though only after a good discount.

Thank you for your time and May the 4th be with you.
